More covering fun... I need to hold off on the bottom wings until I come up with a bomb drop mechanism and install it. I finished the top wings, made one small mistake in procedure and now have four small patches on the top of the wing. Ripping rib stitching, fun fun fun... amazing how many small wrinkles a 400 degree iron will take out. Made the receiver mount, just a piece of balsa sheet the receiver will be velcroed to. Simple, easy, and easy to get to. (right hand side of the pilot's cockpit. ) Still a ton of stuff to do though.... as always. Ordered rigging couplers and quik links from tower the other day, will have to come up with some wire to do rigging. I'll have to move one of the rigging points so it doesn't interfere with the rudder cables, but other than that....

Detail of the rib tapes on the fuselage. I got lazy and didn't do the stitching, but the tapes help cover up ragged edges of covering. Plus the torn edges kinda remind me of pinking cuts... nice that solartex tears so nicely and on such a straight line...

Sigh. Made the same mistake on the bottom wings, at least it won't show as badly. Lots of little stuff, rib tapes on wings, scaff ring finished and set up for rotation, made mounting for lewis gun, and engineered bomb drops. I have no idea how well they'll work, next step is some scale bombs...

The false ribs only show up on the top surface of the wing, and there's debate on whether they even had rib tapes. Better safe than sorry...

To be able to cover, I built hatches into the bottom wing for the bomb drops. AS it turns out, I should have gone out one more bay...

Hatch removed showing covering attach strips and mount points. I can't use the middle blocks as the racks will block them... easy enough to fix...

Prototype drop. Bomb shackle slides into slot at left, and servo simply pulls a piece of wire out that allows bomb to fall..

Mk1 mod 0. I think this will work, my only concern is the slot is a little narrow and with wind forces the bomb might get trapped.

Scaff ring mounted in airplane. Sail servo underneath to allow for rotation...

Where are those Fokkers?

Lotsa little stuff. Painting. Top of wings and fuse fabric is "Italian olive" from Krylon. Not exactally the right shade, but close enough and this stuff sprays great. Plus it's reasonably cheap. And durable. Approx. one can per wing panel... not the greatest coverage but then it's also not going on over plain white. Did some detail electronics stuff, batteries, ignition, etc etc. Still need more Y-harnesses, prob more extensions, and who knows what else. Started work on the droppable bombs. I also ordered some dry transfer decal paper online, pretty happy with the results. A couple coats of varnish and hopefully the decal-y-ness will be less noticeable...

It's just weight, but adds so much tot he plane...

I don't know for sure that it will be tail heavy, but I'm guessing....

Simple to make, hopefully I won't loose many of them....

Dry transfer applied...

Just about ready to take the war to the enemy. Lotsa lead in the nose, little more engine tuning, some further painting.

A final report, and some final pictures. Maiden flight was accomplished under the watchfull eye of Dave Lewis from Balsa USA, and was one of the most unexciting maiden flights I have ever had. Airplane ground handled, flew, landed, and looked great. I got plenty of flights on it during our Dawn patrol, and it made the SKS video. Lead off interview, no less.

Oh, and the next project is on the table. Another 1/4 scale, a little one this time. Another Busa kit, whoda thunk?

Yeah, I know, not the DH. But it flew more than a few times as well..

Waiting for another mission...

If you look very carefully, you can see the bombs just separating from the airplane.... I'm very glad I included that feature...

Does anyone have a 1/4 DH-4 manual they would part with. I got a partially built plane, but no instructions. Thanks in advance.
