Default Ultra Sport 60 by Great Planes

Got the kit last night. Looks to be a production run from 1991. Only thing that's bad is the canopy, it has
a wrinkle in it. I ordered a new one today.
Got a sweet and rare deal from ebay. People usually go crazy with the bidding!
Started the tail section this morning. I'll post a few pictures as I build but nothing in depth...
This may take a while. I haven't built a kit in 10 years!

This is a really great kit! Especially if you like planing and sanding, because a lot of the building is gluing on big chunks of balsa and getting rid of the excess. There's a really good building thread on Ultrasports, with a lot of useful information about things like retracts, flaps, color schemes, and other useful building tips. Fun to read, too, if you're an Ultrasport buff.

I built mine with retratcts but doing it again I would not bother with them.. They are a lot of extra work and unless you are on a paved run way and always land softly you will be forever messing with them .. At least that's my experience with the E Flite Electric ones .. I would go with tail dragger and use DuBro Super Strength Gear mounted just in front of the wing ..That way you can skip all the extra stuff in the wing and save time and weight . It is a wonderful plane .. It flys awesome ..Enjoy your build .. I will be following along . I love the US

Advice well taken. I've decided Not to do retracts after reading posts here on the USport.
I'll probably do Trike Gear. Mainly because of prop clearance and grass runway. I hate black top/paved runways!
Santa has an OS 75ax under the tree for me and I'll be breaking it in with an APC 13 x 8. Looking at the plans a 14 inch prop will be
too close to the ground and I don't care to use larger wheels just yet. I'm going with DUBRO Super Lite wheels.
More pics later.
Thanks for the posts guys!

Oh you are going to love that motor , That's what I put in mine .. It is the perfect combination.. Good choice . You have a super Santa .. I Have one in a Tiger 60 too . They really pull ,they are quiet , they are easy on fuel easy to tune , just all around fantastic motors .. I like grass runways too .

Any of you Ultra Sport flyers need another new in the box kit for $120 shipped? I somehow ended up with three of them and really only need one.

Got a few more pics. Slowly getting it done.
My wing jig was missing a few parts but just using the 1/4" steel rods helps allot.
fredscz, you should have no problem moving that kit!

My old one was a tail dragger. that's how I would do another one if I built one. I took the chin block and cut out a section right in front of the wing. I put a piece of 1/4" ply in the block and sanded it smooth. then drilled out three holes and used a 1/4"x20 tap and thin CA to cut threads. Then attached it with nylon bolts. In the tail I just used a piece of 1/8" ply at the back of the fuse and a cleet style tailwheel.
There is a lot of sanding on these. A razor plane is a huge help.I like to finish with a home made sanding belt. I take a 4' long piece of Duct tape and cut sand paper down into 2" strips and cover the center 3' of the duct tape. The last 6" on each end I just fold over. Then sit on the step of my shop and with the fuse between my knees work the sanding belt back and forth like I was polishing a boot. The paper should be riding on the top of the fuse and each of your hands pulling up/down below the fuse. This will sand the turtle deck for example perfectly round. Just be sure not to stay in one spot while you saw it back and forth.

I like the tail dragger too .. I think moving the gear in front of the wing is a good idea because you are removing all the stresses of landing from the wing ..Good idea on the sanding belts Dave . The razor planes help a lot , there is a lot of shaping to do on this plane . Mike was still alive when I was doing my last US and when I was doing the bottom of the wing I was getting tired of sanding so I took a pic and posted it and Mike called it a pregnant guppy ..Hi was fun and I miss him and always remember him when I think about my US ..

Last US60 I built was over 20 years ago and I used Futaba S-148's, all of 33 oz torque for the 2 elevators. Now I am building another one and have decided to split the elevators and power each with a Hitec hs-225mg which is rated at 66 oz. at 6v. They will be rear fuselage mounted. Any negatives to this? I will post pics shortly.

I used the same servos on a Goldberg Ultimate two years ago. Had no issues.

The only thing that I can see might be an issue would be tail weight .

I don't think it will be tail heavy. I replaced the horizontal stab and elevators with built up surfaces which saved 2 oz. The engine is an OS 75AX with a Macs super muffler and the conventional gear is Thorpe with 3" wheels and pants mounted farther ahead than plan. So I should be ok...............Maybe !

Looking good!
I'm using Hitec 225BB also and probably use a Hitec HS81 for the throttle.

Started the fuselage.
Got the wings mostly done.

QUESTION for bikerbc, which Firewall did you use for the OS 75ax? Did you use the one for the OS 60SF?
My motor is under the Christmas Tree! I guess I could get the Specs for the OS 75ax off the Web...
I was going to send you a private message about the motor and which mount you used but I can't get the page to open!

I know what you mean! Great Planes kits build like a Tank!
I've probably built 10 GP kits over the years and they fair much better on poor landings compared to allot of other kits.

JPMorgan I think I used the adjustable motor mount that came with the kit . It has been a while though .. I just went out and took a peek and I can see the black mount so I pretty sure its one of those adjustable ones ...I drill them and tap them and use bolts . They work fine ..

10-4. I'll use that mount as well. And I do the same, I drill and tap them too.
I'll be using the firewall set-up for the 61SF. It's the same size as the 75ax...

Forgot to add, the engine in mine is the OS 75ax and I used the kit supplied mount with no problems.
