I also make my own cowl molds. Have one for a Chipmunk and P-51. Soon will start forming the cowls for a 1/7th P-61. Will also try my hand at forming canopies. The only thing I have yet to figure out is making wheel pants. I have the molds done, but joining them together is where I am stuck. I'll figure it out some day.

This is why I try to collect and save my plans. You can scratch build these old kits for hardly anything. Some old kit prices are pretty ridiculous.

I prefer building. You get exactly what you want from a builder that really wants it done right! I understand the ARF popularity. I personally get more satisfaction from flying something I spent time building.

Hi, you know that's really not why they're expensive. I have just become the new owner of the Cambria Funfighter range. www.Funfighters.co.uk At present the likely sales this year will be about 100 kits. I am trying to improve these figures but the only way of currently doing this is to distribute to shops. I have to pay tax on the cost of the kit then the shop has to charge 20% tax on the sale. If I go down this route I'll make £10 per kit. I then get income tax to come out of that. I'll leave you with the maths but I'm only doing this for my own enjoyment and to keep a bit of aeromodelling history alive for people who still get pleasure from the models.
I'm willing to bet that many other small firms do the same. I agree the costs are high and being in the USA postage puts this range out of reach for most of you guys. But the only way to get the prices down is to get the sales up. These kits and many others of the like are home grown and not made in China.

When I asked the question, where have all the builders gone, I kinda figured that this would turn into answers hardly related to the question, I never expected to see some posting over 20 times, the Beard and grimmace are running neck n neck and joebahl is moving up fast. Must be really hard to stay on track and it's hard finding a good sounding board where anyone really cares what some have to say, "OH WELL".

In spite of what you think, almost all of the posts are relating well to your question, and the current situation at hand. You should be proud that you have created a thread with this much interest.

Maybe that is the answer. The only builders left are right here. Or did you ask your question wrong? You seem to touch on the fact there is a lack of build threads. Is that what you want to know?

I have done 3 or4 build threads on another site and people say its hard to get time to build but starting a build thread and taking pictures and explainging what you cut and how you cut it ,the way you glued it in that way for just takes up twice my time to get my new plane done. If builders here are like me i have 10 to 15 builds picked out already and hope to get 3 or 4 done a year so doing a build thread eats up a build or 2 each year and iam not getting any younger ! . Yep its nice to show others and help them learn but just like raising our kids its our turn to build now. BTW i build very slow .lol joe

Craftsmanship will always be something I look up to .. whether its custom cars, buildings, furniture ,paintings or airplanes... There is nothing more interesting than the creations of someone that is skilled with their hands. Thats why people are still fascinated with objects from the masters of many ancient civilizations.
When it comes down to it ,every arf and kit exist because of a builder. Some of them just live on different continents and work in factories. I am sure they get very tired looking at the exact same covering schemes by the end of a model run like the rest of us.

I think your in the wrong thread, like the "I don't crash" thread not the " where are all the builders"! What the hell are you talking about?

Did someone just compare a balsa wood toy to an Etruscan urn?

I think someone is feeling a bit insecure.

One thing I noticed on this thread is the ones who tried to start the builder/ARF argument were the non-builders.

Let it go!!!

I've got kits to build but having a job takes most all of my time. Last time I built something was about 7 years ago before I got my current job. Went to ARF's so I could have something to fly without spending 80 to 100 hours building a kit.

Got this kit for a steal on 'ebay, the seller most not have realized it's true value. Struggled through the build, can't lie, I might have made some mistakes along the way. At the end of the day, I can proudly say I have my first balsa build under my belt. Yes, it was laser cut and i worked with a set of plans, but a guy's gotta start somewhere.

Soon...very soon. We're getting another foot of snow as I type this, so it might be a little while. I'm excited about the maiden though. Might need one of my club pros at my side.
