Where have all the builders gone

I've been doing this a long time, not as long as some in here, but for me it started in 1974. Built a Carl Goldberg "Buster" control line plane.

My Dad Gene in 1942 with his Comet Sailplane with Dennymite Engine. I colorized the picture.

Me around 1981, I was the only one in my school that was interested in planes of any kind. All my "flying buddies" were old men, so not much has changed except that I'm an old man now.

Me still building today, 1/4 scale F-104. Model is actually bigger than it looks, Lets just say I'm bigger than most!

Yeah, but I'm looking forward to seeing it all together and on a flight-line.

My answer to the ARF's is that I recently completed my first scratch build of my own designed 69" span profile based on the Extra 300 outline and it turned out so well that I am planning to do another very shortly but not another profile. I guess I'll stop building when the balsa runs out.

Very nice looking model. Even though I'm not a real fan of jet models I do appreciate excellent workmanship whenever I see it......very obvious with this model. Really looking forward to seeing it all finished and functional.

the builders are out there and there's still plenty of them, but they don't visit many sites much anymore because no-one on these sites knows anything about building something that isn't an ARF.....if you want to call that "building". a scratch builder comes on here and says something and a bunch of ARF "builders" plug up the thread with posts about "why go through all the trouble of building when you could be using that time flying". some of us like to build and consider it as much a part of the hobby as the flying.

I agree with acdii.
Although I have three ARTFs, they are a means to an end. Two are four channel trainers which I use to teach beginners how to fly and the other is a low wing aerobatic monoplane which I use to improve my flying. Having said that the covering on one of the trainers is so poor that much of it has been replaced by your humble servant so I've almost built that one too!

Man, that is a cool looking Starfighter. I wish my strip planking looked that nice.

I like building, but would much rather fly!
I am at the other end of the spectrum flying since 1968 I have a long list of planes to convert to electric. though my son and I plan to build a pair or 3 platt fw190d-9's he flew the one I maidened in 1983 (the year he was borm) and absolutely loved it, and flew the pants off it till it was just held together by the silk span covering.
so an occasional ARF gets me a new plane quick. I'm just finishing a Black horse Macchi 200 which will look great next to my IMP Macchi C.202. wing spans are within 4 inches of each other. that's how I pick arf's if its an over built (p-51, cub) or obscure ARF (p-36,mc200) is perfect.

The above statement mirrors my sentiments exactly. I can remember back when if you wanted to fly you simply had to build something to fly. Sometimes the price we are asked to pay for progress hurts but not in our pockets.
