What engine is recommended for this plane?

DLE 55 RA is a good one for 1/3 scale, I use a DLE 30 cc in the 1/4 scale I'm building now. DLE makes a very good engine and it's very popular, all their engines in fact.

For price and performance their hard to beat, while there are others out there I stick with DLEs because I have never had problems with any of them and it's the most popular engine in gas planes at our field and on these web builds.

Not a J-3, but a Balsa USA PA-18. I disagree with the single cylinder gasser for this type model, it will shake it to pieces.

Safe a few more bucks and throw a Saito 57TS gas twin four stroke in there.

You can shake anything to pieces if it isn't built right, single cyl. engines have been used in these planes for years, converted weed eaters led to the G-26 and a host of others, it's the most popular engine used today.

Really don't want to argue about it... But he asked for our opinions. I gave mine.

My recommendation was not just an opinion. The plane in the photo had a Saito 300 twin (Glow). That was switched to a DLE55 to save on fuel costs. Due to vibration, which was destroying his scale details, the 55 was replaced with a Saito 57TS 4 Stroke Gasser.

Couple photos of the same plane, with the 55 in it.

I have Two 1/3 scale BUSA Cubs both with the G62 in them . they have been flying for years . I have never had a problem with vibration . I do balance my props . There are smoother engines out there now but I figure if its not broke don't fix it . The G62 is heavy and that probably helps absorb some vibration . There is still a fair chunk of lead on the snout .

Sun Devil sorry , there was no intent to argue and you made a good point with the twin Saito. Opposed engines are one of the smoothest running engines out there and you did a beautiful job on yours. A good amount of engine choices hinge on their cost, it's one of the things that make single cylinder engines so popular and the primary reason I stated what I did. Baring that I would go with the Saito or other opposed engine if I could afford them which I can't.

Love your plane,

Leroy

That plane belonged to a now deceased pilot from my area. It was not mine. The build / detail was absolutely amazing. The last time I saw it the plane was parked as a display piece at a local hobby shop.
