RE: show us ur skybolts
Mica, last week I was at the field and out of the 20 planes that were there I had the only planes that werent ARF.{{ A Boeing P-12 and Krier Kraft}} Both were scratched because there aren't any kits of these planes. I'm starting to get tired of people asking me if my planes are ARF. Building is becoming A lost Art, it's A shame. I now pick up old kits at shows and the big fly ins and just stock pile them until I need something new, at the moment it's an old AeroMaster that I found complete for $50.00, not A thing missing from the kit.

greay beard i totally agree, building is a lost art I hear ppl say they have no time to build kits. So i tell'em neither do i i only work on mine once a week for a few hours. There response? nothing.lol There is more pride in it when u build a kit. How can u take pride in a plane someone you dont even no built??? They should never ARF the skybolt, i think that is what makes this plane so unique, and why ppl ask use were that beautiful plane came from.

Here's mine, I just got finished stripping it and re-covering it. I like the new colors alot better than the old colors, But I've always loved flying it. To see what it looked like before check out my gallery.

WOW you guys have some great looking planes. I have always wanted a skybolt but just dont have the money as i am in school and working as both a volunteer firefighter and emt. when i asked at the LHS how much it would cost to get this kit, he asked how much i had. So i told him, to cut a long story short i never did get the skybolt. but he said he had something that sounded similar these.

I'll tell you what Paul, there's a thread in the beginners forum about sharing the wealth (so to speak) and giving away items that we no longer use. If you want to take a trip up to MN, you can have my old Skybolt (Or what's left of it LOL).
It still flies great, and with a little TLC and maybe a new covering job, It'll look good as new.

RE: show us ur skybolts
I've been thinking about getting a Skybolt, but now, thanks to this thread I'm turning that thinking into reality! I was thinking of putting an OS FX61 in it but I notice many of you have larger engines. Will the FX61 be enough? I'm not looking for an extreme machine, just a nice flying Bipe.

RE: show us ur skybolts
na the fx61 probally wotn be enough power. I would sticka .91 4strok in the nose. This is a heavy plane that is over enginerred, and it need some power to stay in the air.

RE: show us ur skybolts
That's very true and it "will "be tail heavy. I would go no less than a 91fx and for a 2 cy I would recommend what I used, but I would use longer landing gear because of the ground clearance. On mine the prop almost always hits the ground. I had a 3 blade on it before and that worked great but it finally broke. I need to get another one.

Thanks for the replys on the engine! I've been putting four strokes in all my planes lately, but I was thinking a hot two-stroke might be more in order for this. I'm leaning toward the 91fx so I can put a pitts stlye exhaust on it. Will a .91 fit inside the cowl or will it poke out slightly?

Hello Steve,
As you can see in the picture the OS FX 91 sticks out the cowl just a few mm.
I think you could fly one with 61 as well only the aerobatic performance wouldn't be so good anymore. With the 91 there's more than enough power. And since the weight is the same I would go for the 91.
I didn't have any problems with my CG(battery placed on top of the landing gear)
Groundclearence with a 14x7 prop is 1,5 inch.

RE: show us ur skybolts
Robert,
I like the way you integrated the muffler. If I use the .91 I was going to use a Pitts style. I'm even thinking of using one of the new RCV engines...the .91CD. I've always wanted to try one of those and the .91 supposedly has the same profile as a .50 series motor so it may well fit totally in the cowling. The only issue that may cause is with the prop size as I understand that the RCV's have lots of torque and turn a larger diameter prop.
With the Skybolt I'd probably be better off using the higher RPM 2-stroke.
I'm ordering the kit this week, so I may get it and make the engine decision later.

sseward, A 60 will fly it well, if all you want is a nice flying bipe. A 90 will give it good aerobatic capabilities.
A 91 or 100 4-stroke will be better than a 60 2-stroke. But if you really want to wring it out, go with a YS 110FZ now THAT is an excellent combo.
I would avoid the RCV engine altogether. They swing a larger prop, but at half the RPM. Good for many scale projects, but I think it would really be a dog o the skybolt (If you could ever take off without hitting the prop on the ground! )

RE: show us ur skybolts
Mike,
I did a little research and found that the RCV CD series engines do not turn bigger props. The original SP series was geared 2:1 so they turn lower RPMs and swing a bigger prop. The 91-cd is very comparable to and OS FS-91. It's a little heavier, runs about the same RPM range, but is 22mm shorter in overall height.
That said, I'm still leaning towards a 2-stroke.....for now! I like trying to do things differently and I've been in a 4-stroke rut lately! I bet the skybolt would scream with a .91FX.

Another good option for the SKYBOLT in two strokes are the OS 1.08 or the WEBRA 1.20 w/pump, this engines would really make this ariplane scream!!!!

RE: show us ur skybolts
DBCherry, the YS would be plenty. I have a Saito 120 and I think it's a bit to much. I only push past 3/4 throttle when I go straight vertical. Most of my flying time is at 1/2 throttle.

Okay my question is, would my YS 91 be enough to give decent performance? Not looking for 3D.
