BankYank, Glad you are back on the Extra. Does this mean If the covering works out with your wing, and the warp still measures OK, will you go ahead and finish the Extra ?
I’m almost ready to cover mine. It’s looking like it will be a tad over 10lbs. (I estimated the weight of the Monokote). I have 2 elevator servos in the back to counterbalance the YS120.
Good luck

Yeah its been two days now and the wing is still good to go.
I installed the servo tray today and man is that ever floppy so i had to add some bracing and its now nice and stiff. Seems the parts im getting to now are becoming fiddly bits that seem to take for ever to complete! so its kinda slow going.
I will not be starting any covering till next weekend at the soonest.
Building the canopy and somehow i seem to have cut it about 1/4in to short front to back so im working on a fix for that now but again takes more time.

I had the same problem with the servo tray. I have now scrapped it and made a different layout. I believe the problem could have been avoided if the tray had been cut with the grain going crosswise. Same thing goes for the sloped fuselage former, behind the canopy. Need to let balsaworkbench comment.
Good luck with the workaround for the canopy.

I had no problem with the former behind the canopy.
So the canopy i somehow cut 1/2in to short at the back but the fix for my problem actually worked out pretty decent i think.
First i needed to form some balsa to a usable shape you can see what i came up with.

Balsa stock sanded to shape. Needed to extend the turtle deck

Next thin i did was something i don't do very often but this was the perfect opportunity.

Here you can see how the canopy was counter sunk at the rear. Front fits flush also.

Just a pic showing how it looks. I believe once its all covered a guy will not even really notice it. Will see. Sorry not the best at picture taking or explaining things clearly. Any questions i can sure give specific answers.

So today i made the wing servo mounts but i wanted to try a different way then the usual way i build them
I used 3/32 balsa to line the servo pocket and give the servo door someplace to rest and give the proper bend.

Next i made the servo door using the same thickness as the sheeting.

Once i had the servo door made i used a piece of 1/64 plywood to stiffen the door. I also tried to match the inside shape as close as i could thinking it would stop any movement could occur

Now im at this point. I have the mount holes drilled and the door fit into place. All balsa was hardened with CA and happy to report it is solid!

For servo trays, instead of balsa, use 1/8" ply for the screw doubler. Does two things for you, stiffens the tray itself, especially when the grain is the way yours is and is lite ply, and two, gives more bite for the screws with less chance of tear out. Pilot holes are a must though.

Been trying to mount my engine and it was giving me problems lining it up with the firewall marks from the prints and the cowl. If i sat the engine on the thrust line the cowl would not line up with the spinner even close enough to use. I checked everything on the fuse and all is correct so i so the only thing left was the cowl. I ordered it about a year ago so no chance of returning it
Ordered a new one from "Fibertech n more" ( https://fibertechnmore.com/ )What a difference it fits beautifully. Engine lines up with the fire wall marks and spinner sits near perfect!
The unusable cowl came from Fiberglass specialties now im not trying to cut em down or anything as i have ordered other stuff from them and its been great but the Extra 300 cowl is junk compared to Fibertech's cowl.
Check out how well it conforms at the aft to the fuse. Do your self a favor on this one and order from the Fibertech n more cowl.
The Canopy i ordered from Fiberglass Specialties is perfect by the way.

Fiberglass Specialties does not fit well.

Fibertech n more fits perfect

That’s a nice fitting Fibertech cowl ! I wish mine was the same, but I was able to center my engine driveshaft in the FS cowl. Its right on the money. But I do have 3.5 degrees of right thrust. This is what CG recommends for a 120FS. I guess FS make their cowls for greater than 2 degrees of side thrust, and makes it “adjustable” resulting in a sloppy fit.
Have you decided what finish to use on the cowl ?

So thought i would post my current progress.
So im not a covering genius with making attractive patterns so i tend to steal other peoples designs as i have done with this one also!
Im actually pretty darn good at covering and i find Monokote the easiest to work with for me. This is a easy pattern and does look ok.
Was going to start the fuse covering when i realized i forgot to mount the landing gear. Get the gear mounted and start some fuse covering tomorrow.

Finally maidened the Extra clone today. Had 2 long flights to trim it out. Just needed 2 clicks of right aileron. Brought back memories of the original.
I forgot how much fuel that YS120 sucks up. Seriously thinking about swapping it out for the DLE20.

Congratulations on a successful maiden. Sure took some time in coming but it sounds like it was definitely worth the wait.

Give an RCGF 20cc some thought. Great engine, less than DLE. Best pricing from LeisureRcModels.com

Thanks Karol, Life kept getting in my way on getting this one airborne. Still, it doesn’t pay to rush these things !
