Default RE: Global Cutlass 45 new build with MODS

Hi Guys...
I am still waiting for my .45 Cutlass kit to arrive, so I pulled out my Sureflight .10 kit. I understand that its not the best flying model, and launching this thing with out landing gear may be kind of interesting to say the least. But I do have an old (new in box) Cox TD .15 r/c engine. Its a light little engine and screams with 30% nitro...and may handle the model with light weight landing gear. I'm concerned about the C/G and wonder if the smaller version has the same issues as the .45. I've enclosed a couple of pictures of my kit. Any suggestions would be nice... : )

Hey Guys.....
I just recently came across another Cutlass in the box which I plan to start in the next couple of weeks. My first one was extremely nose heavy and ended in the trees south of our field. See the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-GZucCg4NI
Thanks!!

Hi guys! Is anyone of you still building or flying a Cutlass? Curious how some of these that was not built yet turned out.

Default Dressed up for the dance

A good friend built the Cutlass for me and I just finished up the markings. He set up the inboard elevons on separate servos. I’m wondering if it would fly with the inboards as just elevators and the outboards as ailerons? Opinions anyone?

Default Cutlass

Your Cutlass looks sharp! Your friend did a nice job on the build.

If your radio can handle it, I'd set up flight modes to cover both operations; independent inboard and outboard control surfaces programmed into one mode and coupled controls programmed into another mode. Start out with what you know has "worked" (coupled surfaces) and get used to the flight characteristics of the plane. Then, when you're comfortable, take it up high, switch modes to independent surface control, and see how she flys.

My concern is that the inboard surfaces alone will not have enough authority to pitch the model when slow, especially in the landing flare.

Good luck! Please let us know how it goes and also please give us the specs on your plane; weight and engine choice?

Tom

Use a flying wing CG calculator app. I posted about 10 years ago about this airplane, it has issues. #1 plans CG wrong. #2 Main gear has no coil spring to absorb landing stress and it tears out the vertical stab mounts. #3 I had problems with fuel system from the start.

The inboard elevons/flaperons do not have enough area to use as elevator only. I see on your profile you do some work on full scale birds?

thats what I was looking for. I saw someone locked out the inboards and just used the outboards with enlarged area elevons.

as to the full size warbirds, yes I have been fortunate to be able to restore and crew warbirds since 1980. A heart issue has slowed me down working on the full size lately. The meds that I take affect my balance and I didn’t want to find out how it feels to fall off a P-47😳

i am balancing the model to the recommendation in this thread. It’s powered by a Badass BA3530-700kv motor with a Castle 80A esc with a 5000 6s battery. All up weight is 8lbs 9 oz. test flights won’t be until March when the weather gets better. I have 2 more new models to test fly before this one. Been busy with the shelter in place. Building keeps out of my wife’s hair. LOL
