Default Global Cutlass 45 new build with MODS

A good friend in Alaska (Don) was going through his kit ( all 30 to 40 of them ) and found that he had two Cutlass 45 kits and in exchange for Beer's sent me one so that we can build the kit at about the same time.

Now Don and I love to mod a kit to try and make it fly maybe just a little better (or not ) so would like to give the readers a chance to tell us what they have done or would like to do with this kit.

This thread may be a bit slow to get going until next month when I plan to start ( Don to start someday after that ) But will endeavor to include Pics and tips along the way.

From reading other posts on the cutlass I see that it builds heavy, has a mean C/G to find and finding the right power plant seems to be a issue ( most power for the least weight in the .40 to .60 size )

So do join in and lets bash a kit into shape.

Ah, the pressure some people put on me to build. Guess I'll have to participate in this build thread. Gotta finish up another airplane first.

Let's Do It!

Pete,
Somewhere way back I have posted that the Global Cutlass 45 was the worst model I ever had. Too bad because it is a neat looking airplane. It was heavy; the one extremely short flight attempt indicated published CG was way wrong (less than one second for a ten foot high figure 9 after a long ground run on pavement). I have been intrigued by the concept of trying to make one of these fly but never got around to it. That said, I would suggest you replace the heavy "balsa" plywood and consider a pusher engine. Mine came out way nose heavy. I used a Thunder Tiger 46. RCM did a review on this kit years ago; I think I know why they did not publish any flight photos.
Good luck,
Chuck

Thanks for the information there Chuck! I think I may had read your earlier post ... Yup going to have a look at all the suggestions that come in for sure and see where we can save weight ..power wise at this time kinda leaning toward the OS 50SX but have lots a time till then. ( maybe even a Jett .46 [X(] )

From the stock plan with the kit the C/G is marked at 23" from the black plate of the spinner but the notice that also was in the kit tells us to move it to 21". Has any one tried the new C/G at 21".

Also the plan shows the tank on top of the wing and a second option of it behind the fire wall .. Hmmmm .. I think I will go with it on top of the wing and solve the problem with a pump.

Default RE: Global Cutlass 45 new build with MODS

I have a Cutllass in the closet. I'm not planning on building it any time soon. I'm waist deep in a Sig Bonanza right now. The Bonanza is getting the OS50. I love that engine. I like how fast it revs. I will most likely use it on the Cutlass also. Somebody , somewhere must have made this Cutlass fly. Perhaps somewhere between the prototype and the production it gained weight. I have never seen one at the field nor heard of anyone at my clubs that had one. I too, have heard they are heavy. Oh, well. Heavy , it is.

Change of subject. A friend had me test fly a Holy Smoke for him about 15 years ago. Once in the air, it was apparrent that it was a tad tail heavy and the throws were about double what they should have been. I called it the Holy $#@T. I landed it and thanked him for the thrill. I refused to fly it again until it was fixed. So he flew it. For about 30 seconds. He rekitted it thoroughly. It was more of a delta, but the set up on these wings IS critical . If you are lucky enough to get it set up correctly before you destroy the plane, you will very likely have a good plane. I am very interested to hear what your final setup turns out to be. And I am definitely pulling for you guys as you can relay valuable data back to the rest of us with a Cutlass in the closet. Good luck. Oh, here are some schemes.

Oh, one more thing. There is a book called the Wrong Stuff. ITs the life story of a test pilot, sorry, I forgot his name. And I guess that is the point really. His career was spent flying alot of junk. There is an entire chapter about the Gutlass. It was a mess of a plane. The early hydraulic systems were unballanced and the feedback was poor. The long nose gear wanted to punch through and kill you. And the engines were so weak that afterburner was actually needed sometimes at landing if you wondered slightly below glideslope. Its a funny read and the guy sirvived some amazing ordeals. Some of the stories are less funny and more amazing. But his opinion of the "G"utlass was clear.

I have a Holy Smoke that flies like it's on rails. Very stable, very fun. Hope to carry over my experience there to the Cutlass. My Cutlass will be using an Enya 45 BB or the old reliable OS .46 SF.

Gonna be fun. Got a lot more done on the covering my MiG today so I'm just that much closer to getting to the Cutlass.

Good to see the input for the Cutlass keep it coming the more the better ...even one or two lines.

I am going to put this mod on the table for all to comment on,

HOW about installing " Wing Lets" [X(] ...its a modern concept that may help .... any input to this? ..to off set the weight of this mod ..How about putting some small oh 1" round holes in the fins? they seem to be over built.

and SST how about Rule#3: Don't buy a Dodge ... just kidding.

Thanks for the Pic of the cutlass Pilot ..I like the Yellow tips pic

Pete, if this plane works out to be like any other flying wing, it'll be nose heavy. I think the crappy performance came from everybody trying to balance it where the original plans said and that is way too far back. I could be wrong but that engine sticking out well in front of the wing is screaming nose heavy. Winglets would look cool but then it wouldn't be a Cutlass.

SST: I was thinking .60 size in the beginning but, again, the kit being nose-heavy is probably the rule, not the exception. We'll see.

I'm going to have to dig mine out of pile and take a look at kit contents. I have a whole bunch of light wood that I can replace kit parts with to get the weight down.

The K&B .61 is as light as most .46s & even some .40s.

And BTW, Blade...I have a big graphic in the back window of my Dodge Hemi pickup. It shows that little skateboard guy giving the Hawaiian good luck gesture and says "Bite me Bowtie boy"...

I have a K&B "Screamin' 48" but it's the only K&B I have ever owned so I'll take your word for the .61 weight.

Like I said, I have considered going bigger but I'll have to get the plane built before I make a decision. Move things around on the airframe and see what I would have to do to get the CG right. No "Figure 9" maiden flights for me!

Looks like it'll be end of September before I get the kit out of the box. I am finishing up a plane and then leaving for a 3 week vacation September 1st. Peter will already have his flight tested by then...hahahahaha!! (He's a fast builder...I'm what you call "sedate" )

Blade47,

(disclaimer - all prices confirmed at time of order)

A few different "40" size engines fit the bill.
SJ-46 16.75oz 10x6 at 16,500 $250
SJ-50 16.5oz 10x6 at 17,000 $275
SJ-60LX 16.5oz 10x6 at 18,000 $320
(weight and price with tuned muffler, spinner nut, and remote needle valve assembly. BSE engines tend to weigh .25 oz more)

A good budget powerplant is the TT46 Pro (around $80) with the jett-stream muffler ($55) installed. Really turns up on a 9x7 or 10x6.

I trust this is what you were looking for.

happy to be of assistance.

Ive seen a built cutlass before, but I have not seen it fly. Looked fairly nice

When you get down to it, the plane is basically a flying wing. CG location is probably pretty critical as someone noted.

OK here is little list of some (maybe) mods that Don and I have come up with

1) 3 1/2 oz hopper for the fuel tank behind the fire wall and install the main tank over the wing as called for in the plan.
2) wing tip block is 1" going to extend another 3" ..gaining 6" of wing
3) Cut canopy down to sleeker shape
4) wing-lets ..removeable and will install after first test flight
5) Fults dual nose gear
6) solid mount the inboard elevators so that they do not work ...extend out board ones 1"
7) use radio mix for elevators not sliding tray as in plan
8) use 1/8' steel rod for control rods and epoxy bearings
9) install the optional rudders

add to the list or make a comment or two!!

Don ? did I forget get any?

If they will fit (haven't pulled the plans out yet), I'm putting the servos in the wing and doing away with the torque rods and bellcranks.

interested in reasoning of #6.this seems like it could lead to some unwanted snaps at low speed.

This chap had this to say about #6

Papashuc:

"Also use a servo in each elevon and dont use the center section of the aileron next to the body. Made these a fixed part of the wing. If you have already built this part then cut them even with the elevons and taper them in to the fuselage. This part of the elevon will cause you to just fall out of the air when trying to flair for landing, since there almost on the cg. They don't help for elevator at all any ways. Stay away from building with all that light ply that comes with it. Mine is incredibly strong. If i were to build another one I wouldn't use much at all.I'd even use balsa for the bulkheads.

Mine flis very nicely, and flairs for landing really jetlike, watch your slow turning, you'll loose some of your elevator response while turning. Didn't use rudders on mine, I'd use them if I had it to do over."

There is a piece of the elevon inboard of the vertical fin. We're going to just make it a solid trailing edge. That deletes an inboard connection/tie rod through the vertical fin to the outboard part of the elevon. Whatever roll/pitch rate we lose inboard will be made up with the extension of the outboard elevon. It shouldn't affect the flight characteristics much. But we'll see.

Based on what I've read about all the bad experiences people have had with this plane, we can't make it any worse. We're working to lessen weight and wing loading by increasing the span a bit and deleting some pieces/parts. I'm going to replace the heavier kit wood with contest balsa. I have a lot of wood accumulated, might as well use it.
