Default Which pilot for GP Super Skybolt

I've got a 10 year old GP Super Skybolt that I'm taking out of the attic to fly again. I removed the junker ASP .91 out of it and put on a Saito 1.50. I spent tons and tons of hours covering this plane long ago and it still looks great. I made a mistake of not tinting the canopy and adding a pilot the first time around. I'd like to pull the canopy off and lightly tint it and add a scale looking pilot.

What pilot would look good in this plane and where can I buy it? Thanks a lot.

I had the head of "Animal" (the Muppet's drummer) in mine. Looked great.

Toy stores is one of the best places to find pilots

'Stewey', of Family Guy fame adornes the cockpit of mine. Not scale, but he flys the plane pretty good!

I used a 25% scale pilot I picked up at my local hobby shop. The plane is about 23% but the pilot is close to being the right size. I built mine about 10 years ago too with a Saito 1.50. Actually, this is my second one. I crashed my first one on the first flight,,,pulling a snap roll a little too low to the ground. I liked how it flew so I immediately built another one with another Saito 1.50. I flew this one about 6 times. The last time I flew it, I cartwheeled it. I sold the engine and the plane has been sitting in my garage since then. I finally decided to get her in the air again about two months ago. I hate Momokote so I stripped it off of the fuselage and fiberglassed it. I just put the final basecoat of paint on it this evening. I'll start the trim tomorrow and then clearcoat it. I am using an ASP 1.08 this time. I have never flown an ASP but the horsepower is exactly the same as the Saito 1.50. I am hoping it will have plenty of power.

Thanks for the pilot size. That's what I needed, I wasn't sure what scale the Skybolt was, but you answered my question. How did the plane fly with the Saito 1.50?

I had an ASP .91 in mine for the last 10 years and I really had a tough time with it. I bought the motor right when it came out. It was a very new model out and it had problems. The first problem was with the carb. The high speed needle was way too long and went basically all the way through the spray bar, even at wide open. The motor would not get enough fuel and would lean out and die. It did this all through my break in procedure and the motor got so hot, it basically ruined it before I even got it on the plane. I had to run it with the needle unscrewed about 10 turns before it would even remotely run, but it was still lean. That particular needle was just a straight wire that went into the spray bar. I cut 1/4" off it off with wire cutters and ground the end round again. All this after calling the hobby shop I bought it from, trying to contact ASP, etc, etc. Everyone thought I didn't know how to tune engines, so they wouldn't warranty the engine.

Anyway, long story short, after my modifications the engine would run OK, but had very little compression left so it was underpowered. I was so disgusted with the plane that it's been in hung on the wall in the garage for several years. I finally bit the bullet and bought a 4 stroke like I've always wanted, but didn't have the money for. I can't wait to fly my Skybolt with a consistent running engine.

Hmm, I just replied and it dissappeared.

The Saito 1.50 was awesome in the Super Skybolt. Sounds like you had your share of problems with your ASP. Who sells and services ASP engines? This is the first one I have ever had. The compression is incredible.

Horizonhobby.com has ASP parts now. I don't know who it was 10 years ago. My cousin had an ASP .75 at the same time that I bought my .91. It was one of the best running engines I've ever seen. We were able to get the idle down so low. I've never seen an engine idle as low as his did. It was just pop, pop, pop, and it was totally reliable. Instant throttle response to full throttle. They are good engines, I just got one with a design flaw, or it missed quality control on the way out.

Glad to hear about the 1.50 in the skybolt. I figured it would be a good combo.
