RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
a 340 ..... I am thinking of using a saito 72. Hope that the hobby shop from which I am ordering will have it. I asked for saito 82a but they dont have it at the moment.
JpmacG ..... hope that today I will complete building the bottom wind. I will use 2 aileron servos because many people in varius forums say that there is some flatter if using just 1. Will use 2 midi servos (Ripmax SD200 ) both are lighter than one standard servo and about 2.5 kg torgue.
After that I will start building the tail surfaces and then the fuse. Hope I wont experience the same problems as you did.
I will post pics again soon.

Hi Thanos
I also have started on this kit. I am finishing up the lower wing and about to start the fuse. I will be installing dual servos for the ailerons and will be using a Thunder Tiger .61 for power. Keep us informed on the build !!!

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
Haven't find a way on how to install the 2 aileron servos yet. I will have to think of it later. I have to find some pics or ask for the help of a more experienced friend of mine.
Here is the bottom wing finished with struts attached. You can see the holes in the middle which are for servos wires.
I started the stab and fin and I will go for the fuselage tomorrow.
Here is also a photo of a Goldberg's kit that a friend of mine just finished.
Send your photos too guys.

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
Hi Guys,
I was searching for info on the GP Ultimate ARFand came across this string-Just scanned it, so I may have missed something,
but just in case, having built the small Ultimate Kit(color scheme is on RealFlight G2 trim download page)
One word of caution
WATCH THE FINAL WEIGHT !!!
Even trying to be careful-mine came in at about 8lbs
Great planes uses a lot of ply doublers
Just thought I would mention it-Good Luck, it is a really nice little plane if kept light

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
Hi again. Busy weekend.
New photos of stab and elevator, rudder and fin.
Also fuse constraction started.
Haven't experienced any problems yet with balsa quality or while joining fuse sides.
Think it will be a bit heavy in the end but lets wait and see.
That's all for today. New pics will be posted here soon.
Stay tuned guys.

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
Hello.
I'm in the process of building an ultimate my self. My friend gave me this kit a few years ago for Christmas. I was wondering about using a Rossi 40 for power on this kit. I have one laying around the basement, would this be enough to power this bird? Mike

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
Hi Mike ,
It depends on what you want to do with your plane.
I don't know about Rossi engines. But if using 2 stroke engine I think that a .46 will be nice for a start.
I will use a Saito 72 four stroke. Its' about 1.2 ps. So if your engine power is about the same I think that you can use it.
The above engines are those most people use. But if you want more power for 3d and aerobatics then go for something bigger.
Some use .90 or 100 four stroke ! ! !

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
I was looking for the older thread that I swear used to be around here - thought it was a 3-4 page thread on this kit, but I can't seem to find it anymore. It almost seems that someone took the old thread and split it out into smaller threads on some of the various topics.
Anyway - back to my question - has anyone changed the orientation of the upper wing bolts in the top wing/cabane? I don't want to have to leave the hole in the top of the wing/covering to put a nut on every time I assemble the plane. The rest of the plane is ready to fly, I just have to finish sanding and covering the top wing.
I was thinking if I covered the bottom of the wing first, then dropped the bolts through pointed down instead of up, and secured the bots to the wing then covered the top, that way I could mount the wing by pushing the bolts through the cabane strut. That way I thread locknuts onto the bolts from the underside of the cabane structure. Seems that I would be putting less stress on the wing by not tightening and loosening the nuts that would normally be compressing the top wing root rib.
Am I making any sense? Honestly, I just want to avoid the big holes in the top of the wing.

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
Chris,
that's a good idea.
I don't think that you will have any problem if you do that.
An other suggestion that just came in my mind :
Why dont you thread lock nuts on the wing then cover the top and put the
the bolts through under the cabane strut and secure the wing ?
This way you have to use shorter bolts so they will not come out through the top of the wing.

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
In either case, you're going to have a tough time. Whether you have the screw or the nut on the bottom, you're going to have to tighten it by trying to get a tool into a tight spot (inside the cabane, between the top of the Fuse and the bottom of the wing). GIVE THIS SOME SERIOUS THOUGHT!
One of the worst things on this planet is having a really great plane that is a pain in the butt to set up once you get out to the field. The GP Ultimate (And their Skybolt too for that matter) set up so quickly and easily that it's a pleasure doing it. Why go out of your way to re-engineer something that works into something that is a PITA, but looks nice?
Believe me, those two small holes in the top of the wing will never be seen at 500 ft AGL. And if it still bothers you, the Ult 40 is small enough to fit in most cars fully assembled, so do it their way, and then just cover the holes with a small piece covering (Or a decal). That way if you ever need to take the wing off, you can just remove the covering and replace it later

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
unfortunately my "workshop" (read: 9'x11' carport storage room that the wife is still miffed about me having annexed for all my plane "crap") has no free space to safely store the plane with the wings on.
I'm going to take some pics today/tomorrow and see what I can make work.
On a sadder note one of my flying buddies maidened his Dave Patrick/Cermark 40 sized ultimate Sunday - it flew once and then lost all elevator input and nosed in full throttle. Even the most senior guys in the club said that they wouldn't bother rebuilding it. Thinking that either the ca hinges failed, or the servo died/geartrain stripped.

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
More pics here.
Fuse almost finished. I have to finish the turtle deck and the tank hatch.
As you can see firewall has not been glued in place yet.
This is because I am waiting for the engine to fit.
I think this will help me install the tank easier and secure it in place.

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
yeah - I set everything up - will go with the stock method. When I set it all up - my top wing incidence seems pretty far off - I'm having to add at least one more ut to the front bolt on the cabane so that the wing will sit more level.
I don't have an incidence meter - I'll take it to a buddies house who does before I cover the wing.
Thanos - I shoehorned a 12oz tank in mine, but to do it I had to trim the radio tray down, and i mounted my radio tray on hardwood strips and screwed it in so I could get to the tank if problems showed up down the line. I didn't like the idea of making the tank inaccessable.

Hi Chriss,
I had the same insidence problem. So I used an insidence meter to level the top wing.
New pics of my plane will post here soon.

Almost ready ! ! !
Top and bottom wing in place. Incidence adjusted and turtle deck ready too.
It starts to look like a plane now. Looks nice. Can't wait to finish it and fly it although there is much work left
to be done.

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
Tychoc,
it is a very nice kit and easy to built. Just following the instructions.
It needs a little attention to the top wing incidence only.Yesterday I got
my new SAITO 72 engine. Have to break it in first but I am sure it will be ready
when I will finish building the kit.
Even if it looks complete there is so much job to be done.
I will complete hinge the ailerons elevator and rudder today.
Then sanding and covering.
I haven't dicided yet which colors to choose.
I will post new pics soon.

RE: GREAT PLANES ULTIMATE (kit)
I'm about 85% certain that this will be my next build as well. I would certainly use a Saito 4C on this plane, but am not quite certain which one. I know it is said that it flies very nicely on a .72. Is any more than that really necessary? I've got a buddy with a very low-time .82 who is willing to part with it. I want it to have enough power, but there's no point in putting excessively more than enough. The alternative is that I'm currently finishing a SSE with a .72. If I had both the .72 and .82, which is the best match for the SSE and the U40? Note that I'm still a "young" flyer with one full season on an Avistar and Tiger2, so I'm not yet looking for any more than the ability to do much more than clean, basic aerobatics - no wild 3D stuff for quite some time.

A 72 is PLENTY for the GP Ultimate. It's really not a 3-D machine, so anything more than a 70ish size 4-stroke is just adding weight

Progress :
Dual servo mounts for bottom wing are ready.
Sanding finished.
Rudder and elevator hinged and tested in place.
Have to cut the ailerons and then start covering.
Almost ready.
Hope to have this bird flying soon.
