Ultra Sport 60
I am thinking of bidding on an Ultra Sport 60 on Ebay and was wondering if anyone knows what the price of the kit was when it was available. Want to make sure I am not getting too ripped off. I'm thinking of buying this kit and putting in flaps and mech retracts and using it as my warbird training aircraft. Plan on building a TF P-47 .60 size after that. Good idea?

Steve,
The 1995Tower catalogue lists it at $132. I have had three of them and they are great flying airplanes. All mine were tail draggers and I remember at least one with retracts. You did not say what your level of flying expertise is and my opinion on the plane's value as a warbird trainer depends on that. The US flies so well it may not prepare you for warbird nasties! The US will weigh 7 or 8#. A decked out warbird with the same wing area and engine could easily go to 12 or more # and have a much more stall prone thin airfoil at the wing tip.

I too tracked a number of US60 kits on Ebay but found
most of them went for far more than their worth. Some
well over $200.
So I decided to scratch build one from the RCM plans.
It really has not been that difficult. If you really want
a US60 just forget the inflated prices on Ebay and just
build yourself one. If I can do it anyone can.

Thanks for the info. Where do you get the plans if you don't have a kit and RCM is gone? I am currently flying my second plane a 4*40 and have an Ultra Sport 40+ on the board. I just figured a larger aircraft would be good and have heard here that the plane is great.

RCM magazine might be gone, but their plans service is still up and running. You can find that at [link=http://www.rcmmagazine.com]www.rcmmagazine.com[/link] . I also know a kit cutter that can cut you a short kit if you have purchased the plans, or he can sell you the plans too. If you're interested PM me and I'll get you his name and number

Ken is correct. RCM magazine may be gone but the plans service is still
operating. I got my US60 plans about 5 weeks ago. It comes on two
LARGE sheets and is really a nice set of plans. Mine were blue prints.
All I can say is that SO FAR it has not been at all difficult scratch
building this. Certainly not any more than some kits I've built.
I've got the two wing panels built and just about ready to start
on the fuse.
And you can get a canopy for this from Tower/Great Planes.
They still have replacement canopies in stock for their US60 kit.
