Great Planes P-51 Flap Addition
Hello Everyone I have a quick question for anyone who has "modified" kits outside of their original design. I am building a Great Planes P-51 Mustang and am thinking of adding flaps to it. This would be a simple procedure but would provide for slower landing speeds. My only concern is weight and surface area of the controls. This plane is being outfitted with mechanical retracts and an O.S. FS-70 FS. The addition of flaps would add the weight of the added ny-rods and of course an additional servo. I am concerned about weight because the FS-70 isn't exactly light for this size aircraft but is within the recommended engine range. An additional Concern of mine is that if I cut the ailerons down to add flaps that I am going to lose alot of my roll capability due to the decreased usable surface area for ailerons. If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts please share.

Madman,
Just my opinion but I would not worry about adding flaps. This planes lands very slowly without flaps.I had to land mine once with the wheels retracted and it landed so slowly I didn't even scratch the monocote landing on grass.I have a 72 Saito with mechanical retracts.

Thanks for your input Spicoli.
It seems that I am always trying to improve upon things. I wasn't aware that the plane was able to slow that much. How does it perform with your saito?

RE: Great Planes P-51 Flap Addition
I added flaps on mine ---people say a 40 size is too small for flaps but they work so good on landing very stable-- I spent a lot of time making it look more scale------moved the
tail wheel forward to scale postion--- have an os 70 4 stroke--- plenty of power ,flies very scale looking great---It s covered with aluminum ultra kote with the top side painted od
green w/panel line and weathering though to aluminum covering make a nice effect with little work checkboards painted on around the nose----looks great in that low high speed
pass
