Default Spartan Executive Kit Build

What do you think of this as a new kit build project? A seldom seen or subject that is rarely modeled, why...I don't know, because IMO the Spartan has beautiful lines.

Great airplane, it is one of my favorites. Does someone have a kit available?

That's a great subject to model. Truly classic lines and a beautiful airplane.

Mr_Scale,

There are no kits available to my knowledge, perhaps I should have said plan built. You would either have to cut your own, or have a reputable kit cutter do it for you.

I would say that some design changes may have to be made to the plans to bring the construction up to current standards, as the plans and building techniques were instituted over 20 years ago. I hope to have the plans here within a couple of week's, and should be able to elaborate more at that time.

Countryboy,

The Spartan is a beautiful plane and should make a great model. One hundred and seventeen inches is a good size too, especially if you have room to build it and a way to haul it around. Will be interested in hearing more when you get the plans.

Was also noticing the woodwork on the model in the photos, that is something!

An RC friend owns the real thing and does have plans....His is truly a work of art and maintained in the highest standard.
The Spartan was way ahead of other planes of the time, retracts, large radial and lots of speed for a private aircraft in the later 30's.

Oh my! [X(]

The Spartan Exec is also one of my all time favorite airplanes. Interestingly, I recently filled out the Great Planes form for "Suggest Our Next Plane" and suggested the Spartan Executive and sent them some pics.

As a side note, did you know Spartan also made house trailers? I didn't, until my wifes sister and brother-in-law bought some property in Bishop, CA and it had a gorgeous Spartan house trailer on it. All aluminum, with amazing woodwork interior. http://www.spartantrailer.com/

But back to your kit. I look forward to watching this build-up.

Gizmo,

Has it been redone since this picture was taken. What plans do you speak of that your friend has? Always looking & plans alone are scarce for the Spartan.

Cliff,

Your close enough that you can check them out when I get them. By the way, in case you hadn't figured it out, I'm Ronnie and I work with your wife.

The plane looks the same, the photo really could be better.

Hi Countryboy, Looking forward to hearing more on this build. I am starting work on a Harlow PJC-2 from the same era (1930's vintage) which reminds me a lot of the Spartan Executive. This is also another of my future builds. Ben

CountryBoy,

I was thinking that but wasn't sure. You will have to come down and fly with me if it ever warms up and the wind settles down some.

Countryboy,

How's your Spartan search/build going. I'm starting a .60 Spartan soon. And waiting on Jerry Bates 1/4 scale plans.

Yes, his catalog and a reply email indicates it will be ready soon. his e-mail stated late winter, the catalog states January 2011. I'm looking forward to it.

Heres and link to his catalog, the spartan is towards the end.

Bates told me that the Spartan plans would be available last Spring. When it comes to this plans set, patience will be an attribute.

I see it now. Thank you. Wow, 48 pounds though? I think it could be put on a diet and bring that down some.

The very day that I post this, Jerry made the plans available !

A friend has already ordered his, and is in the process of ordering material to complete the build.

If i were your friend i believe i would proceed with caution. The cowl is showing as TBA and i don't see the retracts listed on Sierra Precision's site or even a mention of them. If he has a plan for those 2 issues it may be a different story. Don't get me wrong i love this subject and the size is great plus i have a GT-80 sitting on the shelf. One other item is the front glass. It is compoud curved part i believe. Does any one know of Mr. Bates plan to address that?
