Default How to fuelproof?

Hi all,

I'm building my first kit, and I've gotten to the point of "fuelproof the fuel tank compartment". They recommend either fuel proof model paint, 30 min. epoxy thinned with alcohol, or finishing resin. What do you all recommend?

Thanks,
Mystic

Hi Mystic,
It all depends on personal preference. Each has it's own advatages. In my experience, thinned epoxy tends to be a bit heavier than paint, but provides a little better protection. But if done correctly, both work very well. I don't have any experience using finishing resin, but I imagine it is similar to epoxy. Best of luck.

Mix up some epoxy, add a few drops of plain ol' rubbing alcohol until it's thin, and pour it in, or brush it on. The epoxy will take a lot longer to cure than normal (Like 24 - 48 hrs). Keeping it in a warm place will speed it up. Works like a charm.

Some people will tell you that you ned to use a special kind of alcohol, this may be true if you are thinning the epoxy for structural use, but for fuel-proofing, any kind will do.

Try to get the 90% solution as the epoxy will be happier without all of water in the usual 70% isopropyl. But I think that two coats of Balsarite is a lot simpler.

Mystic6,

I use denatured alcohol with West System Epoxy. You can buy the denatured alcohol at Walmart in the paint department. I found it dried faster than with rubbing alcohol and can be used with the outside temperature a little lower and not get a gummy finish.

When you all say "a few drops of rubbing alcohol" do you mean that literally or is it a 9 to 1 type ratio ?

use a ratio to thin out. This it out so you can use it,remember the alcohol will evaporate away after it is applied.thin out about 10 to 20 percent, this will be plenty.

When I say a few drops, I mean a few drops. Mix it up, if you want it thinner, add a few more drops, and mix again. It's a lot easier to add than to take away
