Carl Goldberg isn't to blame. It's Lanier that sucks. I bought a kit that was manufactured by CG at least 5 to 7 years ago just last December and the pictures of the purple people eater is it. Mine was die cut and went together great. It's Lanier thats cutting costs to manufacture these kits properly and we should all boycott them and not buy anything from them. Their shipping charges are outrageous. Then see how long they remain in business. But everyone of us would have to unite and do it. United we stand and Divided we fall!!![>:]

That's my opinion,

Getting through the Goldberg on the phone is almost impossible, and the last e-mail I sent them took 6 days for them to reply to. All of that combined with my experiences with this kit have made me decide to never buy anything from them again unless they do something about their products and their customer service.

I have a Fliton Extra 330 coming in to hold me over while I finish this Chipmunk. I'm going to put most of the good hardware I ordered for this plane into the Fliton.

Ramon,

i know what you're talking about with the canopy. don't let that discourage you though. there are several different methods that you could go to get a canopy. ebay? canopy from another manf? or if worst comes to worse.......you could take a 2 liter clear plastic bottle and cut your own canopy- i know it wouldn't be the "stock canopy" but then at least you could finish the build and fly it!

i've seen several threads about using the 2 liter bottles to cut canopies out of them.

[sm=thumbs_up.gif]Say! Now that's an idea worth pursuing.
Even if it didn't work, all that's lost is a little time - and of course a plastic bottle that would have been trash anyway.

Thanks!

Also ... I may have found one at Fiberglass Specialties. Just waiting on a reply to my email to find out. That would be great too!

The thing is - buying Carl Goldberg products is the same as buying Lanier because it supports the Lanier company.
So boycott both Lanier AND Carl Goldberg.

Craig at Fiberglass Specialties confirmed that the canopy is indeed for the Super Chipmunk we are talking about here, which is GREAT!
So, I put an order in for one a few minutes ago.

Here's a link to his site - [link=http://www.fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com/]Fiberglass Specialties[/link]

And while I was looking around his site, I found he has cowls and wheel pants for some of my other kits I have stashed back.
Good thing to find out.

Also, Much, Much better to deal with than that person at CG.

That order was placed late on the 4th. I received it, in the mail, today, on the 7th![sm=regular_smile.gif]

That was QUICK!, and his shipping was just $7.40 on the canopy - which is 62.55% of what Carl Goldberg wanted to ship one just a few miles.

GOOD, FAST SERVICE and with lower shipping! [sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]

Also, of equal importance, the canopy is clear as glass. Not the 'plastic' look of the stock canopy.[sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif]

Needless to say, I'm impressed with [link=http://www.fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com/]Fiberglass Specialties [/link] .

Fiberglass Specialties will get more business from me, [sm=regular_smile.gif] and Carl Goldberg will not get any more business from me.[sm=devious.gif]

If Lanier bought out Goldberg then why be upset with the individual. His products are now under the control of Lanier correct? Not buying from Goldberg isn't going to affect the guy that had a very good company until Lanier took over. It's only going to hurt Lanier.

I am very happy with the quality of the fiberglass cowl I bought from them. I had the same experiences you did concerning the company.

It is my understanding (could be wrong) that the reason the company Carl Goldberg products was sold was that the person Carl Goldberg died. As I said, that may, or may not be true - I'm not sure. (that's been awhile back and the memory is a little foggy)

[sm=75_75.gif]And therefore, all my references to 'Carl Goldberg', and boycotting 'Carl Goldberg' is directed at the company Carl Goldberg - and not at the individual 'Carl Goldberg'. The person 'Carl Goldberg' helped the hobby immensely, and formed the company, Carl Goldberg products - Which was one of the best when he owned and ran it, but is now being ruined by Lanier and its' mis-management.

Understand now??[sm=wink_smile.gif]

Don't throw good money after bad. Do yourself a favor and buy products from a better company. Any person is only asking for troubles for themselves when they ignore the warnings and stubbornly follow the bad. -- i.e. the Hanger 9 Corsair - it's failures are well documented on RCU. But 'some' stubbornly support that plane like it was a member of their family, instead of acknowledging that they were 'taken' by the Hanger 9 company. Go figure![sm=bananahead.gif] Human nature can be REAL weird at times.

He was a good enough individual that I NEVER heard any bad reports about him.
And I wouldn't want to put any blame on him ether for what's happening now. It couldn't be his fault, even if he was still alive.

One report I read about his development of what became the Falcon 56, said that he won a pattern contest back then flying the prototype with a single channel (rudder only) radio.

Why, oh why, did Lanier have to end up with his company?

It just amazes me that a company like Lanier is still in business. And even more amazing is how have they survived for the years they have been around. They were known as 'junk' when I was in the hobby over 20 years ago.

Well, whoever is to blame, the kit sucks now. I've done a bit of work on it here and there, but I'm enjoying assembling my Fliton Extra 330 ARF to fly while I finish this bird up. First ARF I've had since a trainer in the early 90s, and man they've come a long way.

Anyway, as far as the Chipmunk goes, I have gotten a little bit done to it. I filled in the low spots in the leading edge sheeting with a 3:1 mix of microballoons:epoxy, and that seemed to really help strengthen the superthin sheeting. Hopefully, if I am careful enough, I can sand it down and make it nice and smooth without taking off anymore wood.

I need pictures. Now!

Nope, I cleaned up my workroom and right now I have the Fliton laying all over the place. I have some tristock and epoxy fillets drying on it. Once it's dry enough to move around I'm going to flip it around and epoxy a bit more, and probably add some fiberglass to it. It's really heavy glass though, so I may wait until I get some lighter sheets. I was hoping to use glass in place of tons of tristock, but not sure about that yet. I may just stick to using a bunch of small 1/4" tristock epoxied all around the engine box and firewall and go with that.

what are you going to use? 3/4 oz cloth ? or maybe 1.5 oz ?

i'll take a few pics tomorrow, i'm planning on doing the top and then shrinking the open bay areas.after that, i'll move on to the top wing............you know how the skybolt has those nice beautiful big rounded wing tips? i never imagined that they'd be as much of a [email protected]% to cover as they are!!!!!

It's Great Planes Heavy Fiberglass tape (strips, really). I think it might be heavier than 1.5oz., but I can't really tell.

It's really to bad you didn't get one of the kits before Lanier took over. Mine was really nice and I posted pictures previously in this thread. I'm sure the purple, pink, watermelon, blue and black wasn't everyones favorite but I like it.

Yep .... Mine is one of the first produced when Carl Goldberg ran the company. And it has been a great kit to build. Everything fit together nicely and it went together straight. Obviously Lanier must have changed it after they took over. And it sounds like for the worse.

Here's a thread (the one I referred to earlier) about the dud CG/Lanier hotstick and CG/Laniers' response. Notice that it was only after posting the thread, and several emails to CG/Lanier by him, and myself, (maybe others too) that CG/Lanier FINALLY did the right thing by the Texas man. Here's the link to it; [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4653104/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm]Carl Goldberg Hotstick is it a dud? [/link]

From the tone of the email replies I got, then and now on the canopy, CG is not a company I want to do business with.

Also notice how the attitude of the thread changed after CG was made to do right. You would think that they had done something spectacular, instead of just replacing his airframe. Which was the absolute minimum they could do. According to what I read in his thread, his NEW engine and radio were damaged too, because of THEIR wing failure.[sm=tired.gif] But NOW, everything is rosey?[sm=confused.gif]

As I said before, "Human nature can be REAL weird at times. " ... or maybe some people just enjoy being sc_____ ..... err, ah, ... well you know what I mean.[sm=wink_smile.gif]
