Hello, I am finally getting around to starting my next project. I just purchased a Pete N Poke and I decided to do my first build thread. A thread to get feedback and help from others. Also as a way to show my friends that I had to move away from how my progress is going. So hopefully you all will enjoy and be able to add some construction criticism.. My plan is to use a Magnum .52 4 Stroke. First I would like to know if this will be enough power. I am first going to post some pictures of my new workshop where all the action will happen. Please check back as often as you like to look for more pictures. Have a good day.

Here are a few additional pictures of my workshop. It is a 10x10 shed I bought for $600.00. My awesome wife decided it was time to have my own space out of the garage, cool huh. It now has power outlets throughout. It also has a computer with wireless internet so I can buy more supplies or just to surf rcuniverse.com. Well here are a few more pictures. See you soon.

Ok on to the build thread. Here I started off building the Horizontal stab. I had to glue two pieces of balsa together to get the right thickness. I only had about an hour to work on it today and this is what I got done. I will try to get the rest of the stab done tomorrow. Please be patient I think this will be a slow build. I am in the Air force and it is testing time so i have to spend a lot of my time studying. Please keep checking back.

Hey thanks guys for your comments so far. I appreciate it. Yeah i know I dont have a window yet but I found a 20.00 trailer window that I will buy and put above my tool box. Also I have a killer radio system coming out of my computer speakers to enjoy while I build. With that being said I know that during the summer i am going to need some kind of fan but thanks for the advice. Also I forgot to mention I am working on a vent system to get some of the dust out of there. Also I have been using a vent system so I can run my models while inside so I dont piss my neighbors off. I love it it works great but needs to be modified. Anyways thanks again for the replies. Mark

Pretty decent hangar you got there Mark, I think you will need a fan in there this summer, may get pretty hot in there. Did you recover that Uglyfly in the rafters? Lets see that engine run stand you built.....Oh this is about the Pete-N-Poke. I thought you were gonna stick that ST .40 on it. Todd

Yeah I will have to get pictures of the test stand. Also I decided that the ST .40 is going to be way under powered and I have a hook up to get a new engine at dealer cost prices. So I guess that ST .40 Will go on the Debonair and the .48 MDS will go on ebay to earn some cash. Anyways I will post more later.

I have not been able to touch it really since I last posted. Those Airmen have been keeping me really busy. I did however get that MDS .48 engine off of my debonair and put that .40 Super Tigre on there. I did that so I could break that engine in and so I could throw that MDS on EBAY to start saving some cash for my first 4 Stroke. I will get the stab done in a coupe days and post more photos though. Anyways got to run. Mark

Very nice shop. You need to get rid of that clock. Time has no meaning when you are working on a plane. I don't see any lights, do you have something over your bench?
And how do you keep the beer cold?

Yep actually I do have a fluorescent light bar above my work bench. It puts off all the light I cold ever want. Of course there is also a nice heater that has been keeping me warm. As far as that clock goes yeah I should get rid of it, but if I did I would lose all track of time. Also I attached a picture of the engine that I am going to bless my Pete N Poke with.

Finally got a few minutes today to get the horizontal stab done and ran into my first snag. The kit only comes with (1) 1/4 x 5/8 x 30" balsa stick which is used for the elevators LE and TE. So I went to build the elevator and the balsa came up a little short, so I will need to stop by hobby lobby tomorrow and pick up some wood so I can move on to the vertica stab. Anyways I should be able to post some pictures then. Thanks for bearing with me and the slow progress.

Regarding your first question regarding powering the "poke" with the Magmun 52. Mine is powered with the O.S. 52 4 stroke and IMO is a perfect match. The Magnum should be the same.
A couple of tips you may want to consider:
Either replace the lite ply engine mount with aircraft ply or simply add 1 additional mount made from aircraft ply. I have found that the the blind nuts tend to pull themselves through the softer ply and the engine loosens up some. Not a biggie, but it's easy to do and improves the engine mounting.
Make sure you strengthen the wing mounting struts with pins, toothpicks or something similar. If the joints in the struts (cabane) aren't perfect, eventually the plane may suddenly morph into a lawn dart. There have been earlier posts on this topic.
All in all, it's a great plane (pardon the pun) and a good flyer. I really enjoy mine and still fly it frequently after having built it several years ago.

Hey thanks for the great info. I have heard a lot about the about the toothpick idea but still kind of dont understand how or where that would work. Could you post pictures of what you are talking about. Thanks again.

Sorry, I don't have any way to post pictures at this time, but once you start building the fuselage and get to the point where you are building the wing struts (cabane), you will see where strengthening is a good idea. Basically there a 2 struts, 1 forward and 1 aft both built with 2 vertical pieces and 1 horizontal piece (+ diagonals). The pins would be inserted through the verical pieces into the horizontal piece. You could also add gussets for additional strength.
Hope this helps.

Sorry for the slow progress. I finally got to Hobby Lobby to get some balsa to finish up the tail. Here are a couple pictures of the final product. You will notice that the tail is pretty good size and the control surface will be very responsive. Anyways here are some pictures. I will get more done this week. Thanks for everyones input. Oh I am planning buying my engine this week too. Mark

I think i am going to go with the creme and maroon look. I want to keep that vintage look. That is also why I want to buy my first four stroke engine. By the way anyone have any thoughts on the ASP 52 Four Stroke motor. Is it a piece of junk? Will it be the same power as the Magnum 52? i also thought about just using the Magnum .46XLS. I have one on my Kougar and it has been the best engine I have ever had. Will it be enough power? Thanks
Oh and Todd when are you going to purchase that Telemaster huh. I think it would be a good plane for you. Talk to you later.

Ordered it Friday with a bunch of other stuff. Hope it gets to fly before my next all expece paid "vacation" to "Sand Land". Look for the build in the ARF secton. (shamless plug). And how do you figure the ffffour stroke is retro?--Kidding, those 4 strokes sound cool, but I figured out my prop selection on 2 strokes, and I don't want to mess with valve adjustment, good luck with that. Cream and maroon will look good.
and Rctoyflyer don't bind yourself to one glue, each is good for it's own way. The thinner CAs wick and are good for tight Joints, thicker stuff fills gaps. and Epoxies are better for structural joints, as a rule the longer it takes to cure the stronger it is. and dont forget the poly glues wich foam up and are useful too.

Congrats Todd
So lets hear it what did the wife let you buy? What does a bunch of other stuff mean? Inquiring minds want to know.
Also great answer on the glues. The main thing you have to look at is the set up time and strength of each type. For the main structures like firewalls, landing gear, bulkheads, ect always use epoxy. It takes a little while to set up but a must for high stress areas. Like Todd said if you have a tight joint use the thin because it seeps down into the wood and joins them together. Medium is what I prefer most of the time it allows a few extra seconds to place the balsa where you want it. Of course lastly is the thick. Great for anything really that you need additional time to place balsa where you need it.
I hope that this helps. Mark

other stuff...mainly stuff like props, and misc accessories. and that build will have to wait until after my "Vacation". Sometimes I think your gluejoint is stronger than the wood itself and it is the wood that fails.
