Hi Learjet builders. Did anyone finish and fly their jet? I have one on the bench that is about 70% done, but wanted to hear how yours fly in case I need to make modifications before continuing! I have an OS 55AX that I am planning on using. Is anyone doing flaps or flaperons? Keep the photos coming!

I flew mine. It does not like to slow down, flaps would be a good addition to bleed off speed or set up for a long approach. If you add flaps I wiold make them a 1/4" wider than the ailerons. Once on the ground it slows pretty good. It rolls very clean with no elevator correction, and depending on the radio system you are running I would advise adding in some expo. I fly a Futaba 10c on 7 ch mode with digital servos and the ailerons are very touchy, I will be adding expo for the next flight. Inverted flight also required no elevator correction. All in all she flys great but lands like a jet. I have read that flaperons are not advisable as they can cause tip stalls. The os 55ax is an excellent choice for this plane.

RE: Learjet .40 Build
Im about to start on my second lear, has anyone found those damn cones yet.I had one on my first with a os .40fsr on a tuned pipe, this plane flew awsome but i switched to a tuned pipe when the muff kept hitting the ground.I flew it with the rainbow colors that is pictured on the box & sold the plane after 50 or so flights for $500 without the motor. Was very interested in all the build pics you had and remembered all my issues then,LOL.My wing needed couple deg of pos incedance to make it fly right.I know better this time to check when puting the tail on.

RE: Learjet .40 Build
I have the LJ flying very smooth now. I have added 35% expo and worked on the epa's and now it has a lot softer feel to it. I made one of the sweetest crosswind precision landings I have made with it on the last flight...crabbed it in with no rudder, just throttle control, touched down on the mains 5' in from the end of the runway, which is also narrow. From the experiences of the first flights I never thought I would get it flying as good as it is now.
I have found that the key to good landings with it is to setup for a nice loooong approach to bleed off speed and establish a good glide slope. Control the rate of descent with the throttle, while keeping it in a slightly nose high attitude.

RE: Learjet .40 Build
I know this thread is old however I figured I might try and get a response. I am currently building this kit and will be installing the servos today. I am trying to build this kit as an Electric and was wondering if anyone remembered how much their model weighed with retracts when all was said and done? Im thinking of using an Eflite power .52 brushless motor with 590kv which should keep me in the 12k rpm ballpark on a 6s battery.

Opened the box for this kit the other day and couldn’t find the plans. Not sure where I left them….Grrrr. they say the memory is the first to go….Luckily a friend has the same kit and has offered the use of his plans..
Going with an OS 55AX and E-Flite electric retracts.
Still debating between flaps or just flaperons….I will probably go with flaps and program them to act as ailerons when the gear is up and flaps when the gear is down. (I did that on my Chipmunk and they work very well)

Im reviving an old thread here, I have a NIB kit that I have had put away for a few years. Time to start the build Im strongly considering going electric
not EDF, but maybe an eflite power 60 with a 6s pack if I can get her to balance. Has anybody successfully done this bird in electric? I had one of these before with a 55ax it flew really well, did some really nice knife edge passes.

Slightly off topic. I ended up with the Great Planes white Lear Jet spinner a while back when I purchased a small lot of R/C items to get the two pieces I needed. I was surprised to see the spinner is exactly the same spinner as the Top Flite Cessna 182 spinner except for color. So if any of you are trying to find the correct shape use one with the Cessna profile and you will be golden.

I had forgotten to post my flight report. I finally got some good weather and I flew the Lear. I am very impressed with the way she fly's. Might be one of the best planes I have ever flown. I got lucky and needed no trim at all, but I did need a tad more elevator throw than recommended on the plans. She does need speed on approach and I have to land with about 1/4 power. She does come in fast and she even leaves rubber on the bottom of the wing from the wheels touching down on the asphalt. On the second flight I lost the hatch cover for the servo compartment. I discovered the screws that I used were a little on the short side and were not making contact with the hatch mounts. I made a new cover and used longer screws and she is ready for flight once again. I am still bummed that these kits are not made any more. Great Planes had winners and now they are gone.....

Good luck with your build motoman. I also have a kit waiting to be built. Not sure on the engine yet but will plan spring air retracts. Maybe do winglets instead of tip tanks but will need experiment with some ideas first. Looking to source a spinner. Can't even find the recommended TF 182 spinner so I'm considering a truturn ultimate possibly.
