Default Freedom 20

I needed something to build for my New OS 30 4 stroke, bought it before the big increases. A friend of mine sold me on a Carl Goldberg "Freedom 20". I just love the wing on this little plane so i thought i would post a few shots of the build and finished job. The biggest mod was to get rid of the Rubber Band wing hold downs.

I added a ply brace to support the wing hold down bolts. The elev and rudder are simple stick construction. I could only pin the sides of the stab braces, the web is 1/8" material and very light

I covered the Elev and Fin in one piece (Thanks Gene), including the control surfaces. This is easier than trying to cover seperate with thin light material-plus the added benefit of a sealed hinge.

I finished the fuse and saved the wing for last. Will get side to side balanced, epoxy the weights needed to the end rib then cover. I know this is a boring plane but what else would you use a little 30 4 stroke for??? I've seen some posts asking the question.
This is my ARM CHAIR plane intended for sitting down talking to buds and flying for 20-30 minutes, landing and never leaving my chair. I heard the plane will do respectable areobats-Will see. I'll post the finished product when i complete the wing.

As seen in the photo below, I have also built a Freedom 20, and is actually the plane I learned to fly from a runway with. It was a pretty simple build and is a beautiful flying plane, powered by a K&B .28 sportster 2-stroke. I thought about changing to nylon bolt mounting for the wing, however I just haven't taken the time to do so. You will most certainly enjoy this plane!

I learned how to fly on this plane too. Very aerobatic, nice flying airplane. I flew this one with floats too. Had an old Magnum (Thunder Tiger) 25GP. Everyone thought it was a 40 size plane. Brings back memories. Nice color scheme frenchie.

Cheers!

Thanks Jolli,Nice Nice colors their R2, I heard that from a friend who said his boy learned on the plane. Nice flying plane. Said his has 3 to 400 flights and the kid just about wore it out. Like i said i want to just sit in a chair and relax with it while i'm talking with my friends. I all but finished the wing on the 24th and will put the final trim on it the 27th and post it then. It was an easy fast build and now on to more exciting stuff.
Anyone else with some pix of this plane-It is now a discountinued relic!

You're going to love the way this plane flies! That brings back some memories. This was the first airplane I built after learning on a glider. I had a .25 on it, but I can't remember what brand. It flies great, and is relatively aerobatic. I actually got a little board with mine after a couple of years, so I shortened the wing by about 5 inches, moved the CG to the absolute aft position, removed the landing gear, and put all the throws to maximum. It was a pretty crazy flier after that. It probably did things never intended. My next airplane was an Ultimate Biplane! I finally ended up giving it away. Here are a couple of pics when it was new. Good luck, and enjoy it.

Well i ran the little 30 os this weekend with the 40+ degree weather and it ran like most OS engines-smooth and reliable. Remounted everything, finished the wing after i added lead to one wing tip for side to side balance. Ready to go for spring. It was an easy fun build, got me ready for the Corsair, a little more difficult wing. This plane should do what i wanted at 3lbs-3oz.

You might be able to find it, Tower just discountinued it. Simple and cheap to build. I like the wing design.

It's definitely a different wing. Too bad these kits are going away like this. I had always planned on one day building another trainer and had planned on a replica of my original plane (CG Eagle 2) but I think one of these would be a more fun and agile trainer to have in the hangar. Plus I think it'd make a great night plane.

I just found a Freedom 20 kit at a garage sale last year. I'm building it with both landing gear and a float kit conversion. I also am doing the wing bolt mod and I'm also designing a wing flap mod into the build as well.

How did it fly with the OS .30 4-stroke Frenchie79?

Funny you should ask, had it out last weekend and it flies just great. The 30 is the perfect setup-quiet, powerfull and sipps fuel. I think 40 minutes is the most at one time I had it up- 6 or 8 oz tank. I just changed it to a tail dragger this year and it's perfect now. The tail wheel is free wheeling and you steer with rudder only, but no big deal. Landings are perfect two wheel and run out-Plane makes you look really good. Like I said, i use this for relaxing flight because of it's large flight envelope and ability to due some nice stuff. Last time out we put it through 35 consecutive loops with no change in throttle-all sitting in a chair-that kind of stuff.
Build it and enjoy-it's worth it.

Hey thats great to hear!! Can't wait to get mine going, just so busy these days! Hey did you have a nose heavy issue with your .30 4stroke installed. I have to mount the rx battery behind the servos by cutting an access panel in the back of the fusalage, to get it to balance.

Finished up my Freedom with the .30 OS 4-stroke and had its maiden flight a couple of weeks ago on wheels. Your right Frenchie, flies great with the little .30. Had its maiden float flight last weekend and again it flies very scale!! I have to increase the prop size/pitch though because it is flying a bit heavy but thanks to the flap mod I did, it does really good!! Overall I'm really happy with the model.

This brings back old memories. Taught myself how to fly on a freedom 20. It was a great little plane, a little tough at first, It was my first kit build and after repetitive crashes I got real good at repairs. This is what mine ended up looking like a few years later. This one is a scratch built replica of my original modified freedom 20 that got shot down in 1995.

Hello,
How were you able to secure the leading edge of the wing for the bolt down mod?

Thanks.
