Speaking of a long time...ha...sorry I've been so long between postings. But good ol' bigtim has kept it going for us all! I'm still waiting on my stuff from Hawaii. Moving company said not until the 28th! ugggg. So my build is still on hold for the moment...

I've been keeping myself busy with some ARF's...I bought the parkzone BF 109 and the P51(both nice flyers for foam!). Also a Ta152 composite. Still missing working on the P40 though, and I'm hoping that it makes the move ok...we'll see I guess.

Ok...

So the slow boat from the Islands finally made it today. After close inspection, my P-40 seems to have made it in one piece! Amazing really.... I need to just get my work shop in order now that everything has arrived and I'll be back in business!

bigtim, I'm only alittle north of Sac, and go the the Bay Area quite abit...perhaps we could run into each other some day and do alittle flying...we also have some nice sites around here if you ever find yourself looking for a reason to run off and do alittle flying elsewhere!

well ho!ho!ho! getting close to xmas, haven't had much to report until now but I have a little progress, I was perusing the ebay late one evening and I came across a great deal on a 120 4stroke so I went ahead and bought it for the P-40,after some redrilling of the mounting holes, the mount was set up for a 61 2st

I fit the engine in its proper position with a nice tight gap at the nose, and it looks like it will fit nicely without any cowl hacking I used the old plastic cowl for a size check, I am thinking I might need to get a custom pipe to fit snugly into the engine area but I am happy with the fit of the engine, also some pics of my spinner I picked on ebay for 15$, baby steps.

not alot of progress on the wing but I plan on working on it tonight

tonights bit was removing the aileron bell cranks and cutting the sheeting for my aileron servos, I haven't decided if I am going with full exposed push rods, or hiding the servo end in the wing probably exposed since its easyer to do.

after opening up the wing I found the connectors were well done and fairly tight, and would have done fine, but I prefer to have the servos near the control surfaces in the wing, and after some of the other issues I have come across on this model I didn't trust the push rods and wanted to check them out anyway.

as for issues with the build the sheeting was not properly glued to the leading edge and filler was used to cover the gap,Tim was not too happy but some slivers of balsa to take up the gap and some thin CA and the sheeting was tacked down properly more on this later for now a few more pics of my progress.

Need some help regarding where the fuze and wing meet. With the wing installed, it doesn't sit down flush on the fuze. Should I sand the wing TE to allow for this? Not sure why it doesn't fit.

Default RE: YES another Top Flight P-40 build!!!

andernaman I will post some pics tomorrow of my wing to fuse connection if it will help.

well I have a slightly related project to the P40

as I posted the last time I bought this OS 120E 4st engine and wanted to get it running to a nice tune before I finish mounting it in the plane, the engine is new to me so I am not sure how well it runs, I will check and adjust the valves and the carb settings before I run it.

well I have been at a bit of a impasse on running in, tuning, and testing some of my engines, other than having them mounted in there planes.

so I decided to build a engine test stand out of some ply I had laying around, after cutting the base to size, aprox. 1'x2' I cut a firewall aprox 6"high, and 2 side pieces 7"x6" for bracing.

from the braces I trimmed off 2 corner pieces to allow some space for accessing behind the firewall, these doubled as additional bracing as well I counter sunk some screw holes in the appropriate areas to screw the pieces together, I then applied a liberal amount of glue to all the edges and screwed the parts I had cut together.

I used my Hitachi slide saw to do all the cutting since the pieces were so small it made short work of the job.

after the parts were glued together, I drilled the holes for the 120 4st aluminum mount I had handy, I installed blind nuts and epoxied them in place after setting them in the wood.

my plan is to paint the stand with oil based poly to fuel proof it, and make a adjustable tank mount so I can raise and lower the tank as engine size requires and a couple of bolt locations ts secure it to a surface, most likely a sawhorse or something solid.

I will elaborate on the details later with photos but here was todays progress, it was raining so I decided to do some work in the shop

most of the time I paint, but I am fUlly equipped to do any finish work, trim, crown, cabinet installation all that fun stuff, in San Francisco you have to be versatile, too many years in the const. trades is what it is

just a little progress another bump, tonight I made my aileron servo hatches and glued in the mounting rail at the trailing edge.

I had to remove the sheeting at the servo bay to the trailing edge also, so I could access the area, I will add some balsa to the edges at the ribs so the servo mounting hatch can conform to the curve of the wing then fill the small area of sheeting.

the hatches are a bit larger than the flaps because the servo needs to be mounted at a slight angle to be 90o to the aileron, just a note to builders who choose to have 2 aileron servos, but the actual hatches are quite light its the servos that add the weight.

I was hopeing to be done with the wing repair and refurb, but its full of little problems that need glueing and sanding to get it in shape to glass, I was also hopeing to use LADO gear, but it looks like air retracts are in this birds future, since there lagging so hard, the 2 other sets of rotating gear I have from them are outstanding but are bottom mount gear the TF requires top mounting retracts.

so here are my hatches if you look close enough you can see my reference lines, I will cut the slots in the hatches tomorrow, nice and tidy horn slots so they look clean.

You know Bigtim, I have an extra set of Century Jet Retracts for the P-40 if you were interested. New and never used.

Any updates on the P-40? We did one flight with mine, it kept losing power till it had a hard landing and did some cosmetic damage, that was maybe a year ago. Today I am getting it ready for a flight this weekend. There is a Scale masters event in Sarasota next month, I would like to enter my P-40. I am anxious to hear how yours is going.

I think casey bailed on his and every one else has been drooling over the new ARF its hard to get pumped up for a kit when the ARF is looking so good, but I plan on finishing mine eventually

Well, got 3 good flights on it today, my son did the flying. He says it flies just like his giant Top Flight Mustang. It felt really good after to see it in the air after all this time. I had more anxiety for these flights than for any plane ever. This is so far my favorite plane I have built. Well at least till I complete the BT-13, it will be covered in all real aluminum sheeting. My friend Brian took some pictures of the flights today, sure wish I had put the gear doors on and the pilot in the cockpit. I hope to have it completed by the middle of next month for the Scale Masters Qualifier in Sarasota.
Good luck with yours.
Denny

It is a shame this thread is dead, but I am wondering if anyone has powered their P-40 with the DLE-20RA. If so, how does it fit and work in the cowl. I'm thinking of going this route.

Been busy with other projects but I want to finish up the p-40 from what I have seen there have been quite a few people using the DLE-20 in the ARF models cooling seems to be the biggest issue so you might need some baffling to control the airflow my plan was to use a OS 120 fs but the gas option is a interesting option

Tim,
I was thinking the Rear Exhaust model because I have the kit built P-40. No need for a pitts muffler this way. The regular DLE-20 would work too, I'm just worried about how well the standard muffler would fit in the narrow cowl. I'd love to see photos if anyone has a DLE-20 in their kit built P-40.

Hey Raptureboy,

Long time no see, Buddy. I don't know what happened to this thread. I haven't been on this site hardly at all in years! ! I guess it's been since VJ built his Ryan. I have always had a soft spot for the P-40. I don't know what happened to Casey either. He was one of the good guys on this site.

Take care,
David

Yes David, how's it going? I spend too much time here. Trying to figure out how I am going to repair my P-40 arf without a new cowl available. I am looking to modify mine to use a cowl that the kit uses. Take care.
