ORIGINAL: fredsedno Have any of you "hog" builders cowled,or half cowled your plane? Has anyone mounted the engine horizontally,or canted30 or 45 degrees? fredsedno Many mounted the engine upside down for two main reasons. 1 - Appearance of a nicer looking fuselage front. 2 - Get the exhaust underneath instead of all over the wing and fuselage. Zor Edited to change "undernesth" to "underneath" |
RE: ASTRO HOG
Yes and it also helped to dent the motor when the front gear snapped off. But slime in the plane is not a pretty thing. I guess the answer would be to not break the front gear.:D

RE: ASTRO HOG
Funny, Hogs don't have a 'front gear'. But you can hang the engine any place you like so long as the crankshaft points in the right direction. Even 'back in the day' there was only one Hog that matched the plans, nearly every other LARKS Hog was modified some way, most of them had bubble canopys from the photos still available. If you are interested a perusal of the old late '50s MAN and Aeromodeller will give you plenty of ideas...

RE: ASTRO HOG
There is an option for the 'training gear' to be installed - UGLY (IMHO)...taildragger is the way to go!

gee...some do:)

RE: ASTRO HOG
Thanks guys,
The engine canted to 45 degrees would give a "cleaner" profile and a cowl will add to the effect. fredsedno |
RE: ASTRO HOG
jefEE, you have one good looking bird there...too bad it isn't a traildragger :):):)

RE: ASTRO HOG
Yep jeffEE, but then with three legs, strip airlerons and a high tailplane, it ain't a Hog, either...

RE: ASTRO HOG
All interesting comments.
The main consideration in the original Astro Hog design was the structure. A design that balanced very well, was strong, and in the old days used to be finished with fabric and dope adding to a model that could take the punishment. Zor |
RE: ASTRO HOG
Not too shabby for my nephews first build. And thats the way it built out of the box.

When I finally finish mine Broken Wings, that is how I will do mine. Looks great.

RE: ASTRO HOG
Broken Wings,
Are you using a 61ts? Were you able to confine part of the muffler within the cheeks or did you use a manifold extension and keep the exhaust systemm out side the cheeks? fredsedno |

Yes, it's an OS .61FX and it flys the model real well. I had some trouble with the covering getting hot in that area and added a piece of header wrap. It's fine now.

RE: ASTRO HOG
Thanks Broken Wings, Will follow your lead on engine installation. I have a DuBro fiberglass
landing gear to mount on the fuse, and a Sullivan tail gear. Covering is Ultracote. Still winter up here in the upper right corner. 34" on level ground. looks like I have plenty of time to finish this project. Thanks fredsedno |
