4-stroke engines
couldn't find a forum for engines, so i thought i would post here. i have a friend selling a magnum .70 4-stroke motor and was curious how much more maintenance there is for them over a 2-stroke. i don't know a lot about 2-strokes other than getting them running good after breaking them in, and the thought of maintaining the 4-strokes as far as the valve lashing and all the other things with them make me shy away from them. are they that bad? what's the difference with the break in and tuning?

They have very little additional maintenance. Run them dry, use afterrun oil, many never need a valve adjustment - and it's not a difficult exercise. |

If you need to, setting valves is not that hard.

RE: 4-stroke engines
I hope you have seen this magnum run, how is the idle and high end?? Good transition?? No stammer in the mid range? Make sure it's a good one before you buy or you will be swearing about four strokes forever. I buy/trade OS, Saito and YS and if needed rebuild them. These are the only ones I bother rebuilding.
Other then once in a blue moon needing to adjust the valves I enjoy four strokes better then two strokes. Others may not but I have been using them for a lot of years and find them easier to keep tuned and running. |

teachu2, thanks for the manual. i couldn't find it on the google. the motor does run fine. it's got about 1/2 a gallon through it and he doesn't want it anymore. he got a .55AX for a pretty good deal. i've never run a 4-stroke or took care of one, but i saw a few people talking about them and was just curious about the maintenance for them. i want it for my cub or RV-4. probably the RV-4.
