Well you've spent more on the camera than you'll ever spend on the 4 * 40. :D Have fun taking pictures.

I finally moved up to join the 2.4 crowd and also bought a new 6 channel and even with that, it doesn't come up close in cost to that lens. lol

Well the kit showed up. Time to get the building board set up. :)

And if it isn't obvious, I used to be married to a clean freak and she wouldn't let me have any toys, so I moved out in 92 and been doing my own thing ever since. And lately it's been interior decorating for the "Single Man" with too many hobbies. I kinda like it! [sm=thumbup.gif]

Got the building board set up. Nothing special, just a hollow core door on a 2'x4' fold up table and a well used ceiling tile. Time to go sniff some balsa! :D

Upon opening the box, well I already did to get the manual out for my afternoon constitutional reading, everything is packed in the traditional Sig fashion. And I like the fact that they "Folded" the drawings rather than rolled them up. I hate wrestling with trying re-roll the drawings backards to take the curl out of them.

The canopy has to go though. [:'(] I hate that giant bubble thing. Ill prolly put another SSE canopy on this like my first 4*40.

Gary,
You are the first I've heard of who prefers folded plans over rolled. I've got a Bridi Vanguard on the board next after I finish the Ultra Sport 60. My shop is in the basement and my leg has been giving me fits lately so it has been slow going. Have fun building the 4 *.

Hi John. I just found it easier to flatten out a folded plan on the board than trying to roll a plan backards and wait a few days for it not to beat me up! [:@]

Hope your leg gets better.

I have no affiliation with Sig so my next post and pictures are as a "Customer" like everybody else and yes, I sometimes get mad because I can't find their kits hard to find due to the balsa shortage. One thing I have learned from building a couple of kits, Sigs quality is worth waiting for. I pull no punches here, these shots were taken with a Canon 7D and a 100mm f/2.8L Marco lens that's worth over $2500. If there were bad wood or bad laser cuts, it would show up with my rig. ;)

Thank you for keeping it real Sig!

The kit looks good, but the pictures look great!

I actually like folded plans also (except large scale airplanes).

Lookin good so far!

Hi Gary- are ya gonna do any other mods besides the canopy, like flaps or 'V' tail, etc or is it gonna be 'vanilla'?

Hi ARUP.

Pretty much stock except Ill add 1/4" tri stock to the leading edges of the ailerons, rudder and elevator. Thatll give me just a little more surface area and a lot less sanding. ;)

Well I didn't get anything done last night. UPS guy brought me 4 packages, two of them were photography related and one of them is a tabletop studio, so I was playing with that. Here is the Saito .56.

Thats a fantastic looking engine! It should be the 4*40 vertical forever!

Thanks Jason. I'm pretty sure the Saito will have no problem carrying the 4* around. :) My last 4*40 was powered with Magnum 52 and it had unlimited vert, but it also came out very light at 5 lbs even. This ones going to built a little heavier. I am considering covering it with Solartex and painting a scheme on it, possibly a Warbird scheme. And since the 4 stars are known to be floaters on landings, I don't think the added weight will be a problem.

My radio and other gear showed up today. :D

RE: Another 4*40 build.

You are all set for the build. Good idea on the sullivan tailwheel bracket.

Solartex and paint scheme would be fantastic. I covered a sig spacewalker in koverall, and its much better to paint stuff on, rather then use film to create a scheme.

As for the weight, like you said, no problem adding the extra weight, especially with the power:weight ratio of saito motors. They are light, and produce much more power then other size 4 strokes.

I started framing up the right wing panel. I like to use a metal square on the inboard side where the wing halves will be joined. Sometimes the main or other spars might have a tight fit in the rib cut outs and you could end up with some gaps when joining the wing halves. I HATE sanding!

Nice photo of the stuff from the Unlimited Plane Supply truck! Will follow the build and wish you the best of luck. I agree with the other posters that the engine is a great choice.

I prefer using a straight edge and weights rather than using a bunch of pins. On this wing most of the trailing end on the underside is flat and easy to sand where the top side is rounded and difficult to sand. By using a straight edge with weights should ensure a flat topside taking out the deviations from rib to rib. Also at this point, I am only tacking the glue joints in case something goes wrong and to speed up assembly time. And truth be told, it takes longer to take pictures and talk about it than it does to actually build this kit. lol
