Selecting an engine for a 4* 40
OK...........I'm having an argument with myself and maybe some of you can help. I'm in the middle of a 4* 40 build and I have two new engines. One is a Magnum 52 four stroke and one is a K&B 40........both are great engines but I can't decide...........what do you guys think??

Actually either engine is great for the plane so,
What kind of paint job you going with? Racey one go with the two stroke Golden age go with the 4 stroke. |

I was most happy with a Saito 52 4 cycle. Magnum is about the same.

I'm using an OS 52 four stroke on an ACE 4-40 and it is a perfect match.

Depending on the bottom that one looks like it could be hard to see in the air. Covering job looks pretty basic too. Just by adding some curves instead of straight lines would have smoothed it out. I'm color blind so I like contrasting colors on my planes.
Either engine but I would go with the 4 stroke just because I like them better then a 2 stroke. Pretty much any 40 size engine will work in the plane. |

4-stroke

Go with the 4 stroke. I have a Saito 56 in mine turning an APC 12x6. Sounds great on slow fly bys. Don't know if I will ever buy another 2 stroke.

I had a 4*40 and started with a Saito 50 - flew great! After it got older I used it to break in some other engines; a Saito 65 and a Saito 91. The 65 was a good fit as well - plenty of vertical and it would still slow down. The 91 was ridiculous, but kinda fun. I would go with the 52. Regards, NM

Put the K&B 40 in it and really clip the wings!

RE: Selecting an engine for a 4* 40
Ok........decided on the Magnum 52 four stroke.........had a brand new one on the shelf reserved for my Balsa USA 1/6 scale Sopwith Pup. Got a flyer via email on some discounts from Tower so bought a replacement for $135.............so the Four * 40 will be sporting the one I have.

Good choice. Mine has a OS .52 4-stroke and I couldn't be happier with the performance. Sounds nice too.

RE: Selecting an engine for a 4* 40
Four stroke is the way to go.

No way, you need a Wankle rotary! Just think You get the power of a .30 The weight of a .40 The fuel consumption of a .60 Plus the price of a 1.20 FS! |
