RE: Cobra Build Thread
After getting sidetracted on some other projects and getting the big birds ready for some spring/summer flying, I have returned to the Cobra build. Found all the parts lying around and have mapped out a plan to get the gullwing ready to fly this season.
My modifications to the plane have taken some time but they are just about all finished now, so just one change to the right side landing gear (change to the left side is completed) and it's time to put the engine back on and start with the servos in the fuse, along with gas tank, etc. All the servos for ailerons are in the wings, but I've got to install servos for the tail surfaces as well as servos for the throttle and choke. This is reminiscent of building a home where the initial framework moves along well, but then the finish takes forever! When I get all the servos, engine and radio gear completed I'll take a bunch of pictures of it before covering and post them here. It sure would be nice to see some pictures from anybody who is also working on this plane. It's definitely worth the build, but it does take some time and lots of patience, eh? Pleased to hear you are about to sheet the wings, Gene. You must be coming right along with this thing. Some more pix from you would be great. Whatever happend to AmishWarlord on this build? He mentioned he had received the plans and was about to get started. If you're reading this, AmishWarlord, jump in and let us know how you're doing...would love to hear from you. Anybody else who's working on it, please post something about your experience. |
RE: Cobra Build Thread
You might consider moving this build thread to the kit building threads.
The cobra isn't a beginners plane even if it is scratch built....maybe a scratch building thread. I'd expect that experienced modelers/builders would look in these places rather than a beginners thread......IMHO |

Takes forever to load a photo on RCU these days! This is the jig I'm using to make the gull wings on the swoose build. Easy to make and works great!!!

RE: Cobra Build Thread
Those Bic 537R's are great pens!
When I buy mine I CA glue the pen tube to the body. Keeps it from working lose when you open the cap. Not like your going to "refill" the thing. |
RE: Cobra Build Thread
If there is some general agreement that this build thread should be moved to the giant models or the scratch build area, does anybody know exactly how to do it? Gorish stated some time ago that he was not opposed to moving it, but was unaware of how it's done. I must admit that I don't know how to move it either, but it does make sense to have it listed in a different site rather than a beginner's area.
Should somebody have this know-how and would like to move it, please do it and let us all know where to find it in the future,eh? Anybody want to vote against this proposal? |

If only Minnflyer was here.

Perhaps more than one picture will show up this time. RCU is not the easiest system to work with, but I'm adjusting (I hope)

RE: Cobra Build Thread
You said you were making some modification to the landing gear. What are you doing. Any pictures of the modification.

RE: Cobra Build Thread
I've added an additional support wire attached to the main strut near the axle and running upward and backward to an attachment point in the wing. Plans are now to cover both these wire struts with some balsa to give it a sport racing look. Pictures will follow as soon as get some time.

RE: Cobra Build Thread
Nice build so far! I have the plans for this awesome plane waiting for me in the garage. I don't moderate this forum, however, I will send a request this thread be moved to the person that does. Can't wait to see more progress!

RE: Cobra Build Thread
If it needs to be moved?? 6 of 1, half dozen of the other, Gene can just ask Ken. I think he and Mike both had the super powers for the kit building and beginners forum. I have always shown my building in the kit building forum. My thinking is plans building is just kit building that the builder cuts his own kit then lost his instructions??[8D] It's just a kit to me but even I know I'm strange!!:D:D

RE: Cobra Build Thread
y2k6vette
where do you think we should move the thread to? Don't make any difference to me. |
RE: Cobra Build Thread
I moderate this forum and never received any sort of a request to move this to the forum as noted above.
If Goirish request that it be moved, I'll be more than happy to accomodate his request. CGr. |
RE: Cobra Build Thread
Are we voting??? If so then KIT BUILDING!! I have been standing on my soap box beating my drum telling the guys how easy building from plans is. On top of everything there are just so many cool planes you can choose from compared to what is now offered in kit form. When you first mentioned to me you were going to build a Cobra my first thought was the kit from SIG. As much as I like the little SIG Cobra {K} this bipe is so much cooler and something you aren't going to see at the field. This is also the answer to that question:WHERE HAVE ALL THE KITS GONE??? You just have to cut them yourselves. That too is very easy and I have tried to show people how to do it.
Kit Building!! Perhaps a plane as cool as the Cobra will get a few of the guys into plans building?? I hope so. Gene |
RE: Cobra Build Thread
"Kit Building" works for me....I'm not dead set on any forum, so this one's just fine.

RE: Cobra Build Thread
I'm just awaiting something from Gene (Goirish) before I move it.
Since I know nothing about the Cobra, I am hesitant to just move it. I will leave that up to you experts on this sort of build thread. All it would take is a recommendation from Gene and - POOF - it's moved! CGr. |
RE: Cobra Build Thread
I responded to a PM sent by CG. The move to Kit building is fine. Let's do it.

A couple of pictures of the landing gear change....not really necessary for sure, but I'm using a ZDZ80 engine (read: heavier) and it will have smoke system on board.....so I felt a little more strength in the gear would be acceptable.

Three more landing gear shots and I'm off to lunch with some "grossly infected" RC Flyers....inasmuch as there's no known cure for our illness we've decided to embrace it and go all out!!!!!!!!!

RE: Cobra Build Thread
OK, guys.. I'll put it in the Kit Building forum. When moving a thread like that, I can leave leave a link to it. I'll do that too.
CGr. |
RE: Cobra Build Thread
That ZDZ80 is gonna make my 55 look like a 1/2a:D:D:D
|
RE: Cobra Build Thread
Gene,
My plane will be much heavier for sure; and I fly @ 5,000'.....not much real "air" up here! |
RE: Cobra Build Thread
Here it resides.
In the future, if you run into something like this again - meaning something that you feel belongs in a different forum, please let me know. There was a request from someone that went to another moderator. The other moderator put a note in the Moderators Forum, and that's where I found out about the request to move it. As I stated in the reply to the other Moderator, when this first started out, it got a lot of attention, lots of folks reading the thread, some posting replies, so I was reluctant to move it, even though I thought it might belong somewhere else. Since I know nothing about the Cobra, I didn't know where it might belong, so I left it alone. And, I didn't want to move it without permission from the OP, Goirish, a person I consider a good friend, so, as I said, I left it alone. I hope this works better for you all. I cannot moderate from this forum, so if you want it moved from here, I cannot do it, RCKen or the actual Forum Moderator will have to do it. I don't know who is taking care of this forum, now that Mike is no longer with us... [&o] CGr |
