TopFlight Stinson Engine

I am about to start on a stinson and trying to choose a engine. i see a lot of builders use a g38,but i am wondering if a lighter engine might be better, maybe a dle30 or dle55 any thoughts?

Thanks

use as light an engine as you want. Just be sure to get an extra amount of lead for balance. It is a radial engine a/c and they usually come out tail heavy. My friend has one with a US 41 and with proper equipment placement, he did not have any problems. It is a great engine combo for the plane and a 20x8 prop is the way to go.

I think a DLE 55 would be too much power. The DLE 30 should be good. I would not go with the G-38 though a proven engine,it is a much older design..

I would also consider the New O.S. 33 gasser it looks to be a winner and the price is reasonable.

Best of luck

G38 proven design and you need the weight. No brainer. Just my 2 centavos.

I'm with John. The well proven G-38 is an excellent choice. It solves your balancing issues and provides trouble free power.

You need the weight up front. I have a US41 in mine and still had to add some nose weight. A G38 (especially if you have one) would be a good choice. It doesn't require a lot of power to fly this plane with the big wing.

Will the G38 fit without a lot of cowl cutting? and does anyone know if you can hand start the G38 or will i need a big starter, this is my first gasser so i know very little about them.
Thanks very much for the help

It is better to hear from someone with a G38 in their Stinson but i can tell you with the US41 the only that shows is the spark plug wire in the bottom of the cowl. It should hand start fine but i do use a starter on my US41 even though it has a spring starter. It is a difficult engine to start by hand, once it is running it is fine but here again hopefully someone with a G38 will provide their input.

Horizon will soon carry Zenoahs with RcExel ignitions, eliminating the need for a starter.

The Top Flite Stinson is a beauty ! You should enjoy the build.

A friend has one, powered by a G-38. I have flown it, and like the way it performs. You will be happy with your choice.
