Re-building Casburn King Lucky Fly
 

I found the plane hangin at wild bills for 100 bucks. Sadly, it wasnt built completely right, and the wings skins where glued on with 3m 77 spray...a big no no.
It had been painted ....about 3 lbs worth of filler and paint. Looked like dog crap. Anyhow, I been messin with it on and off for some 7 years now. I just about have the paint all removed. Theres still some traces but I can smooth that out. Im gonna monokote the thing when Im done.
I had to round off everything on the plane, as it was all left square....gawd! I rounded the nose, the wingtips, and the spinner area. I'm at the point where I want to create a fillet from the bottom of front fuse, to the wing bottom , for a smooth transition. Problem is, the builder made a hatch that the fuel tank sits on, and I have no idea as to the thickness of the bottom of the nose section,stated on the plans.....I have no plans for it. So, anyone have a plane for this plane?
I will just blend it in with thick balsa if need be...
Heres the other fixes Im doing.
Remove all paint, and fillers, and recover in monokote.
rebuild under nose section.
Round all areas that need it.
Feulproof the engine compartment.
drill small holes in wing skins, run thin foam safe c.a. into the holes, to firmly attach the obeechie ply skins where they have lifted.
I have some stuff done, some in the works.
I'll post some pics if any intrested....
so...anyone have a plan for a johnny casburn king lucky fly? its the 90 size one.

Oh boy that's an oldie but goodie from way back. We had a 40 size Lucky Fly/K&B 40 in the late 70's in our little gathering that took quite a beating as we were then just getting our feet wet in RC. Best of luck in getting yours renovated and back in the air.

Hmmm, I am wondering if I used the 77 spray on my wings...whatever I used has lasted to now, and the plane was built in 1982. I have the Little Super Lucky Fly, and I might still have the plans, but I don't know if will help with your bigger version? Let me know if you want me to find it. BTW please do post pics of your progress! Jon

Hope it holds for ya...:) Im gonna try to post pics...if it works, i will add descriptin...
Had to add balsa on wingsaddle to get the wing aligned with H stab. It will be done nicely, those are test spacers .
The rear of the wing will also be blended in.
The engine compartment has been built up...it was totaly open like an old trainer, on the sides and top.
Wingtips were squares...I rounded em off, and I will final sand em here shortly.
You can se under the nose where I added a long thick block. Before, there was a flat bottom all the way to the spinner ring....that 3as wrong so I am sculpting a new front end.
On the turtledeck pic, you can see some paint still needing removal....gawd....this thing had so much paint, wasnt even funny...
Lat pic, you can see how round Im gettin it, as it was a big square nothin to begin with.

Johny Casburn has some nice birds back then. Ihad a Fun Fly. Unfortunately it only made 2 flights and taht was 1975. Mine suffered from either vibration or ghosting/interference as it went full throttle and straight down and made a very big divit in the ground from about 300 feet! All Igot out of it was a box of splinters! That was when I was trying to learn to fly. Needless to say, it really shook me up! I did like the plane though

This reminds me so very much of the model my friend had as in no shape or form did it ever live up to it's name of being a 'Lucky Fly' :D

I had a nice one I built back in the 80s. I picked the kit up from Joe Pinkston in Grand Prairie...he had aquired the casburn tooling and name.
I put an asp91 in it swingin a 14 6 prop.  I flew it well into the 90s ....someone new to our site turned on, and my luckfli bored a hole in the ground. When I got back to the pits, the guy was gone...never seen him again. So finding this one, after searching for 10 years or more for one, made it worth all the hassle of fixin it right. Honestly, the best flying plane I ever owned.....EVER. :eek: :D [8D]

Sanding sanding sanding.Gonna start the monokote  tonight :) What a huge makeover. Im to the point where Im either burned out, or just cant see anymore from lookin so hard at it for so long...hope it looks as good as I want it to...:)

heres a few pics. First Monokote job since the 80s...man I suck!LOL Was fun though. Lots to be done yet. :) You can see my old drawers rapped around my iron ...te heh heh...and the battery from myu old bike I use for weight when needed.</p>

I think I've had every version of the Lucky Fly that Casburn ever made. From the flat canopy and vinyl wing skins, to the bubble canopy and plywood wing skins. Loved every one of them.

thats cool Frank ,Im lookin for a canopy right now. Also, would like to say that the covering is far from finished. I will be cleaning up the lines and trimming the wing in tan. She'll be way cleaner than it looks today :)

I am sure it will look great. As for the canopy, that's going to be rough. I remember the first bubble canopy for the Super Lucky Fly was made by a club member. He had made a plaster mold and vacuum formed it. When Johnny saw it, they were added to each kit after that.

Well it looks like you are finally there or just about, sure was a labour of love. Do keep us informed as to how the maiden flight goes and posting a video would be even nicer. Pretty sure you are going to have a blast reliving some of the memories of your long lost model with your new found pride and joy.
