With a little perseverance you can easily make the 120 a 2 piece wing. The trick is making the joint strong enough so it doesn't snap off in flight (not pretty when it does, been there, done that with the ARF). If you remove all Dihedral, you can use a a double rib on the center end of each panel, and get a fiberglass or phenolic tube to glue into the first 3 ribs, then use a CF or aluminum tube to join them together. Use two dowel pins for the front and at the rear use a plywood plate that spreads across both wing halves and secured with the wing bolts. You now have 2 40" panels instead of the 80" one.
If you want to keep dihedral, you have to come up with a box and spar joiner instead. This was the type used on the ARF that failed in flight. If it was done correctly with webbing connecting to both spars 100%, then the wing would have never failed. The joiner is an aluminum bar that has the angles built into it. I still have the wreckage and some day plan to rebuild it since the wing panels arent too badly damaged, the Fuse is OK from behind the cockpit, and the tail is 100% still. I currently have a rascall 110 , rascal 40 and kadet LT flying with a part built four star 120 in the wings. One of the best flying sigs I have had is the kadet senior. A flying friend that flies mostly 3d managed to talk me out of that one. My 4star 60 also was purchased by another friend. My conclusion on sig airplanes is if you let others fly them they will be hooked. I can see another sig purchase in my future. Probably a replacement kadet senior.

I learned to fly rc on the Kadet Sr. back in the early 80's. That was a the best trainer on the planet. Over the years I have built a bunch of
Sig planes. The first /4 scale was the clipped wing cub . I put a K&B 65 sportster in it, put in a little dive and it would roll. I have built 5 of the 1/4 scale long wing J-3s. They were powered with anything from 90FS to 120FS. I currently have a 1/4 clipped ready to paint. It is going to be powered with Magnum 180. Currently my frequent flyer is is a 1/4 J-3 with a Magnum 90FS. It's a real floater. The thing I like about Sig planes the most is they are nice and light. I would like to take the tour of the Sig plant and fly off Sig field someday. I likes me some Sig products! |

I learned on a Sr Telemaster & went on to fly it for 2 years after doing some minor tweeks. A much more versitile trainer that will not be "outgrown" nearly as fast as a 3-channel ship. |

I haven't built a full wood sig kit yet, My fist sig build was a kwik build p-51 which never got finished and later sold.
I have 2 Sig yaks waiting to go on the board soon as my Stering stearman moves its old bones on my building board. One yak was start by my dad in the 70's and lays in a a messy state at only about 20% built (lots of broken / missing parts) The second is unmolested fresh in the box. It will me used to make a template to get dads done and build others in the future. If sig ever releases the rights to the yak maybe send it off to a kit cutter so everyone can buy one. |
I always felt that Sig avoided making a Pitts as it was the aircraft Glenn Sig had his fatal crash in.

It's not a bad idea to take this opportunity to buy and build a kit. I know the original idea of the thread was alarm over the diminishing ARF
line, but, what a perfect time to try your hand at kit bashing. I have ARF's that I fly and really enjoy but nothing compares to the thrill of rolling out the plans, boning that model up, and covering and finishing it the way YOU want it to look. The maiden is always a little more exciting because of the work you put into it, but man once you see it flying it's an extra special rush. Another benefit is if we give Sig our hobby dollars, they will grow and have more purchasing power to attract really good overseas companies to build better ARF's. |
I built a bunch of Sig kougars , several of the Cubs. and lot of the others beck in the day... The best flying sig kit was the beechcraft Bonanza. it flew great. I bet i built 50 sig kits in the 60 70 and 80s. Glen and Hazel with Clyde Mccullough had a good thing going on.

Have a question for the more experienced builders. I have two older Astro hogs that I would like to renovate but I'm having a terrible time removing the old covering. One looks to be covered in monokote and is so brittle it's just coming off in small bits. The other one looks like some kind of fabric, maybe coverite or coverall, and although it peeled away ok, it left all the color on the wood?? Does anyone have any ideas as to how to remove these covering issues?

I don't know if this will work for you or not. I have had similar problems when removing monokote type covering and found that clear packing tape works pretty well. The tape will usually pull the coloring that was left behind. Just use a new strip each time. I don't know if it would work on fabric covering though. Never tried it.

This is my first post I have ever done And I will say I love all Sig Products an have been using them since I was little.
And we just started carrying there products in our shop. I was a happy man when I started selling there items. (This is not a advertisement for my business) But I will tell you that they have some of the best kits out there and I hope they don't go the same way the other 2 places did. There is no telling how many kits I have built and am building a 4*120 now after my other one lost a fight with the Gravity Gods. |
