How does one keep the epoxy from getting into the center hinge part? Thx

JT:

The most common method is to fold the hinge as far as you can, and dip the pivot part in melted vaseline. Let the vaseline cool/harden, and install the hinges.

This keeps the epoxy from running into the pivot, and lubricates the hinge as well.

Bill.

Yep. Vaseline. But I don't bother melting it, just smear a little on the hinge. (Be careful not to get it on the part you're going to epoxy into the wing!

Well....

I'm glad I asked for next time. I should have done so before installing the hinges in a Pizzaz rudder. Got epoxy all in the joint. Though I was screwed but I put a drop of Militec in each one and wiped off and everything is fine.

Thx for replies.

I do a combination of Bill and Dennis' methods. I dip it the joint cool Vasaline, then hit it lightly with a cigarette lighter.

If you do not flex the hinge back and forth continuously while the epoxy is curing, it won't wick into the hinge knuckle. Usually, what little epoxy does flow over the knuckle is easily chipped away by flexing the hinge after the epoxy hardens. If there are any small amounts of epoxy left, it can be flaked off with a #11 blade. Vaseline or other plastic safe oil is good, but not really needed.

Hey Mike.....what if I don't smoke, then I don't have a cig lghter:D

I typically use PRO BOND which FOAMS, therefore you have to protect the hinge.....USE VASELINE

Use Vasaline but also do not put glue on the hinge. Get the glue into the slot. Then insert the hinge and pull it back and firth in the slot a few times to make sure the glue distributes on the hinge. You really don't have to have glue oozing out of the slot. Dennis

Any advice on how to get epoxy into the slot?
How much epoxy is needed?

Thanks

Here is an RCU "how to" video on installing these hinges, looks like they cover it well;

Well, I don't use vaseline or anything else in the pivot. I just put glue in the hole and not on the hinge. They will not pull out.

Here's exactly what I do:
