BUSA Brotherhood #60

Slowly making progress on the Pup's top wing. Both outer panels are complete and now progressing with the center section. I used Hysol 9462 on the center section to outer panel joints rather than CA as called for in the instructions.

I did made a slight mistake in the build but it isn't anything that is going to be an issue.

Let's see who can find the mistake.

The plane that hit mine barely got hurt...
It broke the prop on my wing and aileron.....tweaked the gear on my wing and fuse, and I think the right stabilizer broke off. but it might be removable anyhow. When they flat spun in my plane cushioned his on impact. To be fair that Bristol had been rebuilt ten times already and is more glue and aluminum than anything else ! hahahahahha



p.s. I am hard on the repair work.....

1/4 scale Dr 1 rebuild finally complete.

It is amazing how quickly our third scale stuff has shrunk. When I drag my tripe out to the field it almost looks big enough to be quarter scale.......a lot of guys have thought that this past year and seem surprised when I tell them it is 1/3 scale.

Not to worry though - I have been doing a lot of advertizing for you guys.

You should think about bringing (to the ODP) your new Junkers and leaving it with me........I can do a flying advertising campaign for BUSA this whole season and then next year I can return it to the company ..... trade it in for your latest and newest and then advertise that one for you the following year. Wow! What a concept!

Quick question for the brotherhood. I am still up-in-the-air regarding power for the Pup but leaning toward electric. Anyone running electric, what size motor, prop, ESC, etc. are you running?

Zemkes, I didn't see if you were asking about the 1/4 or 1/3 Pup? but if its the 1/4 here is some good info, and I have LOTS of videos... After being mid aired I am making some changes and may go to smaller batteries... putting the big over sized batteries at risk doesn't thrill me after the crash..So I am going to try 6 cell 3300's instead. I should still be able to get one nice flight per charge instead of two.. with only 1/3 the price of batteries at risk of crashing !
edit.. I think I have the 245 KV motor from Turnigy...

Thanks for the info. That is exactly what I was looking for. I am building the 1/4 scale Pup.

I hope the info helps.. I got most of my setup ideas from a guy on youtube with a 1/4 Balsa USA SE5a.

Don't get mid-aired once its done ! hahahahha

One question I did have after watching your video, are you running your packs in series or parallel?

I will do my dead-level best to not get mid-aired....lol

Seems to work great with good power and endurance.

Was at the Pekin (IL) Dawn Patrol last Saturday June 27th - got in three flights, but only had the GoPro working for one of them. Got in a little tail-chase action with the CD Michael Smith and his BUSA Fokker D.VII (the improbably historical scenario of a Sopwith Pup chasing down a Fokker D.VII being besides the point!!).

Even after remaking the camera mount, and installing a balanced Zoar propeller, the video is still not quite up to snuff (gotta get the camera a lot more isolated from vibration), but did managed to snag a handful of screengrabs of the action.

It was super windy, and between the crosswinds and the wet grass (they'd been pounded recently with a LOT of rain) I managed to skillfully put my Sopwith on it's back or nose on all three landings - fortunately none the worse for wear!!

Will be working on the Mark 3 camera mount between now and the Ohio Dawn Patrol, which should be a VERY target-rich environment!! I'll also be working very hard to get the cockpit area dressed out and get rid of the ridiculous twine I'm using to keep the cabane struts in position!!

I am glad to see a fellow WW1 flier getting into the on board cameras ! You are fast learning why I built an electric N11... I just kept wanting better pictures after I started taking video.. Its pretty fun going home and RE FLYING each mission or should I say watching the video. I really enjoy that aspect......

I would like to pass this along. I began building the BUSA Spad XIII in 2010, health issues slowed the construction, but I did stick with it. To make a long story shorter, I did finish it. The last item on the list to do was to put the vinyl decals on, I bought them at the same time I bought the kit and they were sent in a mailing tube. When I tried to put them on, as per instructions, the plastic top covering was very hard to remove and it stretched the vinyl which cause wrinkles. I have never called BUSA with a problem before, but I called to order a new set. After explaining my problem, they said they would send me another set free of change. I have been dealing with them since the mid 70's and have built several of their kits, in fact they have 10 pictures of my planes on the customer photo page. This is just an example of what a fine company they are.

Have any of you flying the albi had an issue with the spreader bar fairing splitting from the axel flexing? I'm thinking of making a new fairing and making
the channel for the axel bigger. Wondering what anybody has done if they had the same problem. Going to Port Clinton fly-in the 22nd of this month and would like to have a fix by then.

I will be at the warbird fly-in in Owatonna this weekend. If you like, I can ask the Balsa USA guys themselves?

Welcome to the world of scale modeling.

This is just my opinion ....... on my 1/3 scale and larger models I apply the rib stitching per the full scale method - I actually sew the fabric to the wing.
It is not difficult to do, but I have to admit that is a tab bit time consuming. The end results are worth it - it looks great and is functional......with the added benefit of a longer lasting covering job. At some point as the models get larger, rib stitching will become necessary. I don't know where that point is and I don't intend to find out.

My 2 cents worth.

p.s. nothing worth while is ever easy.
