Jim Roberts Fire Cat.

Anyone have an idea where I might find the plans/ instructions for a Jim Roberts Fire Cat?

Jim Walker FireCat? http://www.americanjuniorclassics.co...re/firecat.htm

Not quite, but there is a connection there. My kit is a .40 size R/C. The outlines are very similar. This kit is from James Robert Smurthwaite. The AMA credits him with a C/L fire cat. I've built two of his Laser Cats from kits also and in fact that's what the plans are for in this kit. The problem is the Laser Cat is a shoulder wing and this is a low wing. The main reason I see a connection is this kit has the exact same decals. I'll try to upload some pictures.

Well I couldn't find a firecat by Jim Roberts but did by Jim Walker. Sorry it didn't help.

I appreciate it.

This may not be much help to you, but I have the Jim Roberts LaserCat kit just waiting for me to build. I'd be happy to look up the specs for it to see how closely it matches your kit. If they'e close, I could make a copy for you.

That could likely be a leap in the right direction! I've had two Laser Cats and that's why I bought this sight unseen. I think the wing is the same. I have the Laser Cat plans. The main plan form fits the pre shaped parts I can identify fun, rudder, etc. The building instructions would be a giant leap forward even if they are for the Laser. I'll gladly make it worth your while for your help.

I'll dig the kit out of storage, and copy the instructions for you. How did you like the LaserCat anyway? It looks to be a very complete, high quality, easy to build kit.

The Laser Cat is an amazing airplane. The kit consists almost entirely of pre shaped spruce parts. They have small control surfaces by today's standards but they aren't 3D planes. Very sleek and fast. The design of the ailerons and other control surfaces are all about avoiding flutter. Gently stall and great landing and ground control. The pleasure I had in flying the Laser Cats made me jump on the Super Fire Cat. I thing it's basically the same although low wing rather than shoulder. The down side is the plans lack a lot of detail and the written instructions don't include illustrations. Still I think I'll have a lot better luck with what you have versus nothing at all. By memory I believe the wing at least is identical.

Success! Send me a PM and I'll send it along to you.

They do look like the same plane, though as you said, the FireCat is a low wing design, and the LaserCat is a shoulder wing design. What did you use for power? I have a couple of Thunder Tiger GP 42s that might do the trick, or I could dig out a Thunder Tiger .46 Pro to go even faster.

CLBetten 05-22-2014 02:20 PM

I had various Super Tigres in the .40 to .51 range, mostly an S.45. I've had the TT .42 in other planes and it would fly great. It's a fun plane to fly fast so I'd consider using your hottest engine in the .40 size. I fly at about 4500-4700 feet range.

RDJeff, did you get my PM?

CLBetten 06-05-2014 08:30 PM

Thanks RDJeff! I likely have enough information to build a nice airplane. You are the kind of person that makes these forums so valuable. I thank you and owe you one, Cliff.

RDJeff 06-06-2014 12:45 PM

I'm certainly glad to help out! Now lets see build some pictures!

My grandson from New Jersey is here for a month. After I don't have him to play with I'm on it.

RDJeff 06-09-2014 02:55 PM

I'll be watching!

CLBetten 06-30-2014 09:50 PM

I actually found the exact kit for sale on this forum. I asked the seller if he would copy the plan and instructions. I expected him to say "Buy my kit and make all of the copies you want." He actually went to the trouble after the kit was sold to make copies before he shipped it. He's another generous man in my book! Thanks dis! And thanks again RDJeff!
