G&L 1/5 DHC chipmunk - diary of a build.

I just ordered my kit from Greg. This will be my second build of this kit. It is a short kit, glass fuselage, foam core wings and stab. This kit builds fairly quick depending on the amount of details.

For this kit I will put a DLE55ra in it. My first chippy was built with a DLE30 and eventually I put a 55 in it and it flew great. The gear will be the 5/8" Robart strait struts (for now).

Some of the changes will be a more successful internal linkages for the tail feathers and tail wheel. The flaps and ailerons will be the same as my P-47, all internal linkages and scale hinge lines. I will glass the wing, stab, and ruder. The scheme will be the same as the first chippy with different airbrush art. I will see what Amy can do with a dragon under the skin on the plane breaking threw at various places and flames coming from the the dragon.

I will order the DLE next and as soon as my DLE85 is broken in I will put the 55 on my Sbach frame and break it in before I put the 120 back on it. I want the engine all broken in before I mount it to the chippy. I will try a 3 blade prop for that scale look.

I will do panel lines and rivets, the same hatch system as the P-47. Not sure what I will do with the canopy yet. I'm still considering a clear canopy. This should be a fun break from the riggers of a built up kit build.

Finish will most likely be rattle can paint, I'm toying with replacing the white color in the scheme with chrome paint, might be cool with the art work!

A man after my own heart!!!! ;)

If you've seen any of my own build threads you know I'm the same way. In fact, I'm getting ready to do a build thread for the guys from Sig. They want me to do one on the Sig Wunder!!!! And I'm here to tell you I can't wait to get to it because that little plane it actually one of my favorites!!!

No not yet, kit is ordered and I am planning the modifications from the first build. Here is a link to the first build. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/kit-...short-kit.htmlone of the things I will do different is the way I build the wing, on chippy 1.0 I cut the ailerons and flaps free from the foam core wing, installed hinge blocks and the facings on the TE and LE, then glued the skin to the wing.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1997212

This time I will only prep the servo bays and the landing gear bays then sheet the wing.

I will add the blocks and facing once I cut the ailerons and flaps from the wing.

I ordered the DLE55ra and a Bowman ring today. I will install the ring when I do the 85. Then once the 85 is broken in I will mount the 55 to the Sbach frame for break in.

Sweet. I'm glad I found the thread before it was mostly done, like usual.

Well it is a quick build with the fuse and foam cor wings, 2-3 months should do. I really need a plane to fly.

My engine came today, servo se are ordered, kit is on its way. I'm getting ready to start as soon as the kit gets here, I'm doing the wing first.

stevegauth30 05-28-2014 03:44 PM

Exciting. What engine did you go with? I'm sure you said already, but I'm too lazy to read back.

TonyBuilder 05-28-2014 04:01 PM

DLE55ra!

stevegauth30 05-28-2014 04:18 PM

Sweet.

TonyBuilder 05-28-2014 04:32 PM

Also ordered the new 5/8" Robart struts, had the 1/2 on the last one.

So I have been designing the control surfaces and planning how I will do them. I want all removable control surfaces for installation, finishing and maintenance. On the flaps they will be the same as my P-47, G-10 for the hinges. I will make the tab on the hinge large enough that I wont need hinge block. I will glue them right into the foam cores. This should speed up the assembly.

On the first chippy I did a closed pocket with Robart hinge points. I did not get the throw I wanted so this style will give me all the throw I want.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999595 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999596

The hinge pocket will be the same also, carbon fiber shell.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999597 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999598

Linkage and servo will also be the same.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999599

Ailerons will be a closed pocket like the prototypes with a hinge pin. G-10 for the hinges.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999600 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999601 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999602

Linkage will be internal.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999604 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999603 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999605

The ruder will be pined and G-10 for the hinges.

The elevator is going to be the biggest challenge being I want to be able to remove it. I want a one piece elevator like on the P-47, with the same kind of linkage.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999607 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999606 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999608

On the first build I did two push rods and two torque rods, they failed and I had to abandoned them. So in addition to the single elevator I am looking in to a pull- pull for the elevator too. I will be building in a hatch under the elevator behind the tail wheel for access.
You can see on the full scale there is an area that can be made into a removable cap just in front on the elevator and under the ruder. This will allow me to remove the elevator in one piece.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999612

So first up as soon as my kit gets here is to install the servo sleeves, gear blocks, and sheet the wing. Once the wing is sheeted I can cut the ailerons and flaps in. I will decrease the dihedral from the first about 50%.

Cant wait to get started, I'm starved for a plane to fly.

First look at the DLE55ra, It is a much improved design over the standard 55. The rear exhaust and the slanted plug make a big difference.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999626 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999627 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999629 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999630 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999631

The muffler is a little big, probably noisy too.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999634

I don't like the plastic extensions, I wish they made the tubes longer so you could cut to fit.
The head will stick out of the bottom of the cowl and the mufflers bottom will be out too. I will see how it fits and weld on some 45 degree extensions once I see how it fits. I will probably do a slit cowl so I can get as tight of a fitting as I can, I hate cutting the cowl but there is no choice here. With the rear exhaust it will not be as butchered as the regular 55.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999635

The carb looks good and as usual the choke and throttle arms are in awkward positions. You can change the throttle but not the choke.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999636 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999637

I will be installing a Bowman ring from the get go.

If I could fit the EME starter I would do it, but there is not enough room.

Do you have a complete list of all the wood used/ordered from your first build. I didn't see it in your parts list

Thanks

TonyBuilder 05-29-2014 01:27 PM

No, I need to see the kit so I know what I need. I'm doing it different so most of what I got won't work. I will only order the LE and TE of the control surfaces, the tips, and the LE of the wing will be the same as the TFGS P-47

all the 3/32 sheeting I will get at the LHS, I like to pick threw it. But I will post a list once I know.

TB

TonyBuilder 05-29-2014 01:52 PM

I installed the Bowman ring today and will put the engine on the test stand to run it if for a bit, just to get a tank or two threw it. Then I am good with breaking it in on the chippy, won't take but 20 flights, I can whip that out in a couple days.
