Meister scale P-47 D-25 Diary of a scale build
 

I just ordered my full wood kit, cowl and canopy. I am just in the planning stages and getting all I need to start the build later this year.

I will use the Sierra gear, and wheels. Power plant is still in flux but I am looking at the Moto Roto 170 4 stroke quad as it just might fit in the cowl, other options are the EME120 and a few others.

This build will be a full on scale build, so lots of research will be done, and has been done as I have built three TFGS P-47 leading up to this build. The scheme will start with the D-25 model as construction is most important to fallow this airframe.

I have not disregarded doing the scheme as " Angie" but I am still looking. Noes art will be airbrushed by Amy, no vinyl graphics on this one, all paint.

Sliding canopy, cowl flaps, inner cooler doors, waist gates, and navigation lights will all be operational. The finish will be glassed and painted.

I played a little with aero foil and did not like the results of the finish, paint will be much better and I can get the results I want. Surface details will be vinyl rivets and detailed overlays by Chad Veich and any other item I can get him to make.

features will be scale hinge lines, all internal linkages. Not sure what I will use for electronics, I would like to use the same smartfly setup I have in my BH super cub but it is limited to 12ch, I suspect I will need more so might have to go with the duel receivers so I can get all 14ch. It is still possible with the smart fly and match boxs to get it done with 12ch, we will see.

For now I am just getting it together and starting the think tank on this build. This will be a more laid back take my time build and will be the only build until it is done.

I have a few ideas to try on some of the detail components that will take time to develop and prototypes will be made.

So a quick look at channel requirements are as fallows;
The smart fly board allows three servos per ch without any Y harness.
this would be the smart fly setup.
Futaba 14ch receiver
two Fromeco 5200. 7.4v bats for flight packs.
2300 7.4 bat for ignition
no external switches, just charging jacks.
pin flag switch.

ch1 ailerons on a match box (2 servos).
ch2 elevator (1 servo)
ch3 throttle (1 servo)
ch4 ruder, and steering on a match box (2 servos)
ch5 gear (1 servo)
ch6 choke (1 servo)
ch7 flaps on a match box (2 servos) landing light optical switch, landing light comes on when gear is down.
ch8 cowl flaps (2 servos)
ch9 inner cooler doors (2 servos)
ch10 engine kill, and the nave lights on a separate optical switch, lights are on when engine is on.
ch11 canopy (1 servo actuator)
ch12 landing light servo (1 servo)

total 16 servos, 3,optical switches, 5 batteries.

First up is compiling the components needed for the elevator torque rod and hinges.

The torque rod will be solid 1/4" aluminum rod with a 1/4" controll arm from Dreamworks.

Three hinges per side, two G-10 pined hinges and one sealed 1/4""x5/8" ball bearing at the control horn.

The ruder will have two pined G-10 hinges and one sealed bearing hinge at the control linkage.

the G-10 hinges will be built and temp installed to a mock up frame before they get installed to the control surfaces. This will allow tuning and testing of the instillation and method of being able to install and remove the pins.

Currently the build schedule/ plan is to start with the stab and wings, then the fuselage.

So engine choice is the most difficult part of this build, finding the right engine. Yes a Moki 180 would be nice and is the perfect choice but at 4k it is out of my leag.

Even the roto 170 would be a stretch at 3k.

Next is some of the inline twines 3W and ZDZ, DA 100 all in the 2k range.

So I am looking, once I have the cowl in hand I can see how the EME120 will fit, or the DLE120

I think my price on the 180 is about $3700, not that much more. I was at a meet over the weeks end and the DLEs were not doing so good. Many of them were overheating. I know that some guys are trying the DA 100s including Dino himself. Jury still out on that one. Resist using budget as the primary criteria in this case. Too much work and too much plane to short change yourself on the engine. Just my humble opinion.

Thanks Gary, I agree on all you mentioned. The formost factor for me is reliability and longevity. My EME 120 has been the most reliable and best running engine right out of the box. It has over 300 starts and has never failed to start or has never died. I think that I can get a good start on the build without making or having the engine in hand as the tail feathers and wings are the bulk of the build. The inline twines are probably the best choice short of the Moki.

One other option would be the Moki 100BVT
this engine would fit in the cowl and swing a 26x10 prop giving scale performance up to 40lb, similar to a 80cc two stroke.

The BME116 will fit in the cowl as it has been used on Miester builds, definitely will consider this engine if I cant pull of the Moki 180

So with all the engine talk it has me thinking about doing a three piece cowl with the two side pannles to be removable for access to install the cowl, engine access and tuning.

It would only be the middle panels leaving the front cowl intact.

Thinking out loud, since we both fly the 14GS. Have you considered SBUS? Will cut down on the clutter and you can program what you want where you want.

yes I have but the cost is twice the cost of standard setup, two receivers, Sbus servos are very pricy, and to be honest I want to keep it as simple as possible and I don't need telemetry so the smart fly offers duel battery, servo splitting, good power distribution, and a built in pin flag switch.

I think I can get it all working on 12ch and can always use the 13-14ch directly off the receiver while using optical switches only.

One option is to go with the smaller single DLE85 as it has 40lb of statick thrust and is a very powerful engine. It would only produce scale flight and this is ok as I don't really need more then that. At 45lb this would work and I would only be able to use a 2 blade prop but that is the plan anyways.

The 85 would be the easiest install and fit very good allowing scale muffler and good baffling.

TB looking forward to your build. I'll be getting back into my Meister P-47 soon. I went with the Fiberglass fuselage and the built up tail and wings. hope to have it finished by the end of this year.
