Great Planes Spectra

I started building, like most of you, in childhood. Starting with balsa, rubber band powered, free flight kits and eventually rc planes. Since then I have always had a love for building and flying model airplanes.

Like most of you builders, I got this kit a couple of years ago and am just now getting back into building. it's been a couple of years, so i decided to start off with something a little easier. I do plan to put in a brushless motor and use a 3s 1300- 1800mAh lipo. Since i purchased this kit used, the previous owner had the tail surfaces built, so i moved onto the wings.

I built the wings as a two piece so transport would be easier. the wings were pretty straight forward and relatively simple to build. I finished the wing and set it aside until the final sanding and covering.

The fuse is next and i started the layout process. Im planning on enlarging the opening in the F1a & f1b for a better fit with the motor i'm going to use. I'm going to mod the front a little buy moving the f2 former up in its location and reenforcing it (pic to come) just enough to give me the prop clearance and to fit larger lipo batteries. Being a used kit, the canopy was missing so I'm going to make one out of balsa. I purchased a 1 3/4 or 45mm folding prop spinner from RC Dude and APC props. The aluminum spinner is nice and just had to order the 3.17mm hub adapter. As far as the motor, I choose the eflite park 400 920 kv brushless. its rated for 145 watts so it should pull this around with not issues. I'm going to try and get the project to around 2 lb.

well, it's back to building and more pics to come.

this is a great little flyer - there were times when it would look like a Christmas ornament and just hanging there if the winds were right. one suggestion - if you still have the piece that came from the air hole in the front - use it as a template to make holes in the sides and plug the hole on the bottom otherwise dirt will come flying in on landing.
