Does anyone get questions about what has to be built when buying a box of wood?Let's show a few kits built up to the bones to show them. This example is a Sig 1/4 scale cub.

JCOKEEFE 06-22-2016 04:53 PM

Excellent job. Building is everything. I have built both the Sig and Balsa USA 1/4 scale Cubs.

Navy18 06-22-2016 05:11 PM

Which engine made a better fit to the 1/4 scale cub? Did you make either with clipped wings?

I build and fly WW I 1/4 scale war birds. I build Balsa USA kits, 2 Fokker D-VIIs, Spad XIII, and the Sopwith Pup. My current build is the 1/4 Scale Fokker DR 1 Tri-plane. All of these can be scale detailed to produce a beautiful flying airplane. Here they are in the BONES and finished.

I liked the OS FS 120. Don't know is it's still available in that displacement. Saito may have a four stroke twin that would work.

OS FT160 is a perfect match for the 1/4 scale cubs and sounds better in it than just about any other engine.

These are just a couple of my in the bones scratch builds over the years, all without plans or drawings, but I do layout and cut out all the parts by hand making a kit as I go.

Balsa 1/4 J3 to super cub

13 Attachment(s)
Going from a J3 to a super cub has its challenges, taking it to a scale replica only adds to it. When it's done it will have everything on it the real plane does including a finished cockpit/cabin. Plane at this post is ready to paint but it's bare bones time but I will post some of the finer details to show where my build is going.

That is the exact plane I hope someday to build, the 1/4 scale Balsa USA Spad XIII. The Sopwith Camel may be more famous, thanks to Snoopy, but I feel the Spad was the better plane. Thanks for posting those!

jwrich 06-29-2016 02:18 PM

Flyboy, I just like the looks of this airplane, it has great lines. I am still in the learning curve in flying it. Everyone I spoke with who built and flys this airplane says it is a great flyer. Many say it flys as well as the Fokker D VII. However, the 1/4 scale Balsa USA Fokker D-VII is the best flying model I have had in the 30+ years of flying RC airplanes.

I may have one of my 1/3 scale Balsa USA DRI in the bones. Great flying aircraft.

If I can remember, I will put some pics of my current build in this thread. It's nothing as involved or detailed as the other fantastic kits that have been posted by you guys. It's just a 50cc AMR High Wing Stick. I do LOVE the BUSA WW1 planes in the pics. I want to build the D7 one day myself. Then, if I win the lottery, I want to build the big Albatross. . . . . . . LOL
