Bud Nosen Citabria 40 Kit Build
 

Well, should I start another one? Anyone that's been on my other build threads know that I'm not a speedy builder. And I stalled out on my Stinson SR9 build as well. Life has been turned upside down so to speak, but it's time to roll her back to the upright and level and get going again.

So somewhere in the spring of 2016 I had a relatively new friend bring me a kit that he had started some years back. He knew he wouldn't be finishing it and he saw the work I did on my 1/4 scale Sig Cub. By the way, this is the friend I happened to run in to out at the abandoned airport where we used to fly. Yup, he was standing on the runway to get some shots of my Cub taking off, and boy did he get more than he bargained for! Anyway, I digress. As you'll see by the photos, there is still a long way to go but I'm looking forward to getting started.

I've been reading through the build instructions for the wings trying to get a handle on where he left off and where I will proceed to. I already know one of the mods I want to make; the plans call for one center standard size servo for the ailerons, but I want to put two micro's in each wing panel. I will also be making the electric, I don't want to have to mess around with nitro any more.

That's about all I have for now. It's supposed to be raining off and on for almost a week, so since I can't fly, might as well get started building again (when I'm not at work)! And as always, comments, suggestions, constructive criticisms are always welcome!

Got a little done today. I set up the table saw to cut the wing centers to the proper length and angle for the dihedral. I also sanded the leading edge. It's amazing how many little things can come along in the day to slow you down!

It was a beautiful day out, warm and overcast, the air was clean... but I toughed it out and stayed home to build! Really getting back into this building thing again, and it's about time!

So today and joined the wing halves. I checked and rechecked the alignment of the wing and the dihedral before gluing it together. I also got the to center sheeting ready to go, I'll put that down tomorrow, provided the weather is bad enough that I don't want to go out in it.

I saw your plea on RCG to save you from building board loneliness. Why you ask, I have an affliction for a Nosen kit as well. Others run from them. I have a 1/4 sc Citabria/Bush plane build going on RCG/my building board. getting close to covering at east on fuse. Amazing a box of wood (some questionable) can make a nice flying bird.

Keep up the build and pics so we can stalk

Wing looks great and leaning against the door gives it some perspective but you cut the top off. Nice to know I wasn't the only one with KP last night.

Eh, the wing tips are nothing to look at right now. The original builder had some... different building techniques I guess you could say. Of course this was his first and only build, so he really didn't do half bad!

You know, it feels really good to get back into building again, I can't wait to get home! Although, with the KP, vacuuming, dusting, laundry... UUUUHHHG!

I know what you mean I ran into some of that with my partially built VK Models DR.1 kit once I got started on it. At first everything looked good but then I made a few discoveries. I'm sure the original owner would have caught his mistakes eventually he just passed on before he could finish. I don't know a builder who doesn't screw up something occasionally (I'm the poster child for this) just some of us are better at hiding our mistakes. It's like trying to resist making little improvements it happens in spite of our best efforts! We all have our ways of doing things and preferences and sometimes you just want to change things up a bit. Can I get an Amen from the choir?

Hey, on the subject of mods and whatnot, I'd like to get opinions on some things. At least for now let's talk about covering even though that's a long way off. Since this is a smaller plane and I am going electric, what covering should I use? I'm thinking keep it lighter and use a Monokote like covering. But would a plane this size be a good candidate for fabric and paint? What do y'all think?

My VK Models DR.1 is pretty small 47" wingspan and 37" length. I'm going to use Solartex with water base paint or rattle can paint like Rustoleum. I want the fabric look but I can iron it on. I was going to do decals now I'm debating using stencils and paint for the markings. Solartex is within a few grams of Monokote transparent so the weight is reasonable.

Hmmm... okay. I was considering using the Stits fabric as that is what I am currently planning on using for the Stinson. This would possibly make a good "practice" project to learn how to use it. On the other hand, I know how the Solartex works. Hmmm... :confused:

I did my first Stits lite project back in early 2000's. Loved it. Got back into hobby again last year and decided was time to practice with Stits again. Just finished up my Robinhood 99 with Stits Lite, pinked tapes, stitches and Polytone paint system. I like it a lot. More time consuming it seems but the finish is great. It is an easy system to use. I did have a few items to rework in adhering fabric using polytak as well as a few pinked taped edges I had to reseal. I was on same mission you mentioned, use it for a good "practice" project. I plan on using it most likely on my Nosen Citabria. Not sure of paints you plan on using. The Polytones spray really nice. System may be a little pricey though on a 40 size. Then again, I have not tried Solartex as of yet. I hear it is the rage.

I know TomCrump has used it on his builds an likes it. He is a cracker jack at using spray cans to paint them too.

I did my 1/4 Cub in Cub Yellow Solartex to save the wait of the paint. I did hit it with a rattle can clear coat to help keep it clean though. I like it even more so than Monokote as far as ease of use. Don't have to worry about using anything like Polytak to keep it down. But I would like to try the Stits next. That should tell me what I want to use on my Stinson. Yes, Tom Crump uses it and he also uses latex paint, I believe that's what he used on his Stinson.

Anna who, I got the dihedral braces glued in tonight. Then my dog wanted to go inside, so I let him while I finished up gluing. That's what the second photo is for. :mad:

Sounds like my house the four footed ladies run this place! They are of the opinion the spare bed in the front room is not for guests but so they can nap and bark out the front window at anyone or anything passing by!

Nice project !

I'd like to se the record straight, on what I use for covering and paint. I do use Natural Solartex, but I use auto paint and Rustoleum for painting it. I am not a fan of latex paint on models. I do use it on my house though. LOL
