Joining wing halves/ covering

I'm building a Tiporare, and it's time to cover the wings. I'm planning to cover them in silkspan with dope. My question is about reinforcing the wing center. Should I glass it first with resin, feather the edges, and then put the silkspan over it? Or should I put the silkspan everywhere then glass? I do plan to follow the original instructions which said to do a wide layer and then a narrow reinforcing layer. But Hanson's instructions assumed the whole wing would be glassed, so I'm not sure how to proceed.

I would glass and then apply silkspan. Doing it the other way around would rely upon the bond between the silkspan and wood for the strength. Glass to wood is a much stronger bond. You will be using Epoxy resin right? I think dope and polyester have compatibility issues.

Yes, Zap epoxy finishing resin unless there is a good reason to use something else.

Not at all. Z poxy will do the job just fine.

As much as it pains me to admit it, I have to agree with Shawn. I will add one detail though. Be sure to cut your fabric on the bias at + - 45. This will maximize the strength gained with the minimum fabric weight.

Hey Scott, been meaning to call you but before I know it the day has gotten away from me. I layed up another Divergent fuselage today using US composites resin. Good stuff. I will let you know how it turns out. Takes me about a week from start to removing from the mold.

Cool, I have been using that resin for a while now and really like it. It does benefit from a post cure of 100 to 110F, especially if you use the slow catalyst. Did you figure the carbon gear out? I still need to order some fabric so let me know.

Sorry for the hijack Jester, you can have your thread back now......

I think the topic has been covered. Hijack away.

Scott, nothing on the gear. I found an acceptable off the shelf solution and am going to stick with it. I would have liked to include them in the kit but multiple lengths are required depending on power used. A contra will require longer legs then single prop use.
