TopFlite heat gun problems

So, I have a top flite heat gun that I use to shrink the film on my planes, but it's behaving erratically, and has been getting worse. Basically, the fan runs as it should but the heat coils won't always come on. If I 'finesse' the switch (move it just off the 'click point' or push in/down/hard/soft/etc....) the heat will come on, but not always for long. Has anybody had any similar experiences or can anyone suggest a fix? I don't really want to go buy a new one, but I prefer to use it over a hot iron. Before taking the durned thing apart, I was hoping somebody could shed some light (or heat) on the subject.

Thanks!

Hi mgirard, it could be that the internal overheat protection switch is faulty. Get a replacement from TF. I have operated mine for some time without any problem.

Try getting some electrical contact cleaner and spraying it in the rotary switch inside. That is a Rheostat and sometimes gunk and stuff can get on it, causing it jump circuit. If that doesnt work, trash it and get a new one. Also spray the stuff while unplugged!!

Thanks, I'll give it a try... I looked at getting it repaired, but by the time I pay shipping and for the repair (and wait) I'm better off getting a new one. Just gotta love the disposable society we live in.

LearJetMech is right. Contact cleaner usually does the trick. You could also have poor contact at the slider. depending on the switch, you may be able to "adjust" it. As already mentioned, don't forget to unplug it first!
