Looking for GeeBee kit

Anyone have an idea who makes a nice GeeBee kit that is or can be converted to electric? I know Piage Aviation has one, but I read that it is very difficult to build. Any ideas?

Adrian Page Gee Bee R2

I have the Adrian Page Gee Bee R2 kit that I have not started. I have been told by one person that there are some tricky places.. but he didn't specify what or where it was tricky.

I am interested to see what you know about this kit. Do you have any place where you can point me so I can learn more about some of the difficulties in this kit before I start it.

Here is a link to the thread where we started talking about the kit...

(Please ignore the ramblings about the SSMKII.. we/I got off topic :) )

Thanks,
TRPP

I dont want to say the kit is bad. I dont know firsthand. I read somewhere that it is difficult to build. If I remember correctly, it said that the instructions were not real clear. That may have changed since that article was written, which, again, Im guessing, was 6 to 8 months ago, at least. Im sure if you have a problem, they (Paige Aviation) would be more than gracious to answer any questions that you might have. Im not a real experienced builder, so good instructions and clear pictures are very important to me. You might whiz right thru it and think it was an easy kit. I hope you do well with it. Take care.

I am right there with you Terry! I am a HUGE fan of Great instructions and clear pictures.

I think I will error on the side of caution and build at least one more kit before I start the R2. I won't be flying it anytime soon so there is no rush.

If you do find a good beginner kit I would love to hear about it.

I have to disagree with the thought of Adrian Page's kits being hard to build. I am currently building the GeeBeeZ kit and have bought the R2 kit to do next. His instructions are not bad at all. No, they don't take you by the hand like a great planes manual but they do have pics and seem very straight forward or at least they do to me. I have built kits before where the instruction manual was 2 pages of photocopied text, now that's rough.
As for the Z kit, the build is pretty straight forward, nothing really hard with the exception of the landing gear, where I am at now. The gear needs to be assembled on the wing and soldered together, but it's not really hard, just the most difficult part of the build, IMHO.

If you have any questions concerning Adrians kits, email him directly, he is very fast in his responses and friendly....

Hope this helps.....

Wow, Derrick. I went to Adrians homepage and that GeeBee Z has got to be the hottest looking plane I ever saw. Thanks for the info about his kits. I only remember what I had read some time ago, and just by what you said, I dont think the article I read was justified. If I thought I could lighten up his Gee Bee Z kit, I sure wouldnt mind having one for electric flying. Again, thanks for correcting me, and you might just have helped Adrian sell another GeeBeeZ kit. Terry.

Terry,
Check out my GEEBEE Z Construction page.
I plan on using a Saito .56 in my Z.
I haven't done anything on my build since March or so but that has been because of combat flying and repairing combat planes. I am building an older version of his kit when it was kitted by Hobby Hanger. Adrian has since re-designed the fuse to get rid of the built up box using sticks and now has a 4 piece laser cut frame work of lite ply. It looks to be a lot better. I just bought the R2 kit directly from him and all I can say is WOW! It doesn't seem like a whole lot of wood in the box for a .60 sized plane but it's all there. The laser cut sheets look well thought out and looks like it maximizes the whole piece of wood in some cases. I think his .60 sized R2 would also make a good candidate for electric as it builds very light.

What is this that I read?... a break in the gray clouds?

I am glad to hear something positive about the Adrian Page R2. I have on sitting in my building room and I thought I was going to have to build two or three more kits before I was to start on this one. I am very glad to read the positive post.

I took a look at the Gee Bee Z page. WOW! That looks to be some excellent building! It looks amazingly well built.

I may start the Gee Bee R2 sooner than I had expected!

Thanks again.

hey Derrick!! Finally building it, eh?? I took out the 56 and put an OS 70 in it - wow!!!

I have a GeeBee Z that my Dad built and I finished, It was the older strip planked version. There were some fiddly spots, but hopefully Adrian has them worked out in his new kit. The landing gear was by far the most difficult - mainly because of the way the original full size was built.....and keeping it scale added to the workload. Adrian was going to make some sport struts for it. The R2 should be easier, as the strut is enclosed by a single fairing. The fibreglass cowl is a work of art...and worth the extra bucks IMHO...

here is a rather low res picture of mine at a scale contest:

Hey Wayne, good to see you on RCU!
Yup, finally got around to starting my Z build. Now I need to kick myself in the butt and get it finished. Maybe less time on the PC would help?

I remember seeing pics of yours in the MAAC mag last year some time, plus you emailed me pics. Looks great! If mine turns out half as good in the finish dept I will be happy!

Adrian's R2 kit is great. I got the fiberglass cowl with r2 kit and it does look good. Look forward to working on that kit as well.

How big a Gee Bee do you want, Northwest has three of them, it would be a huge E-powered jobbie, that's for sure! http://www.nwhobbytechnologies.com/

As webmaster for NW HobbyTechnologies, I would recommend one of our GeeBee Z's or R-2's, and I'll post the link below for each. But it seems you may be looking for a smaller model than that, in which case I have an Adrian Page Z that I may have opened and looked inside the box, but that's all I ever did with it. I'll be happy to give somebody a great deal on it. You pay the shipping charges. I think I paid about $120.00 for it new, so you can use that as your reference for your offers.

I guess I should point out that I'm not looking to recover all my money on thatAdriaan Page GeeBee Z kit, rather, I know I won't be building it and I'd like to see another modeler get one for a bargain price. No use letting it sit here and do nothing. Obviously, I have all the GeeBees I want, Z's, Y's, and R-2's, although they're a lot bigger. I'd like to get a reasonable amount for the kit, but on the low side of reasonable.

R2

I was the one with the AP R2. The only thing that is wrong with the kit is that it has poor and incomplete instructions. As I said over on the beginners board, were I assumed there were beginners looking at building this plane. I cautioned them about the difficullity since the instruction could stand some improvement.
There are several different ways to skin a cat or build a plane so what some will find difficult others with experience in that area will have no problems.
He shows you adding the sheeting around the fuse and butt glueing each sheet together on the plane. If you like to sand that will work but I preassumbeled all parts and prebent them around a barrell so when i came to put on the fuse it wasn't too hard but you have know haow to do that or think it through.
