What Are Some of the Easiest Building Kits?
 

I have a young a Friend who wants to build his first kit. I have done a couple, but really not into kits. He is looking for an easy flying, but fun sport plane; probably in the .40 to .60 size range.

So help us out here guys. What are some of the easiest kits to build/learn on. thanks.

Sig Something Extra.. one of the easiers and fastest kits out there.

Thier 4 star series as well. Acutally, the 4 star is probably easier!

Great plane kits are pretty straight forward, and have excellent manuals. They have a rating system for their kits; both for flying and for building.

Sig kits are equally easy / well documented for building.

Yup. 4 star 40 should be a good first start!

Sig, golberg, great planes, all great flyers and easy to build. Good instructions and they are well thought out.

I'll second the Sig Something Extra. This was one of my first kits, and definately one of the easiest. No sticks to cut, and the surfaces are simple flat stock. The laser cutting really helps. The only tricky part was the detachable canopy, but if you follow the instructions, it should not be a problem.

It is also very fun to fly. Very stable, yet aerobatic at the same time.

Trainer kits are a good place to start since they assume (in addition to being new to flying) you are new to building and include very clear complete instructions. My first kit and plane was a Great Planes PT-60. I was very concerned about building because I'm pretty clutsy but it came out great. If he does not want to build a trainer then the SIG 4-star series would be my recomendation.

I agree that the Great Planes and Carl Goldberg have great biginner kits.

Bruce Tharpe Venture 60. By far the easiest building and most well designed kit I have ever seen. Do a search on the forums here and you will see what I am talking about.

I built the Sig 4 Star and I didn't even know what they meant when they kept refering to the Leading and Trailing Edge. The plane turned out great and flew even better.

BTE Venture 60... a true pleasure.. I have built 2 sig kits and always had wood quality issues, not a big problem but with the BTE kits, there is no "shelf time" at the hobby shop, when you get it, it was probably kitted a few days or the day it was shipped and everything is chosen by the owner/designer of the plane and is top quality...complete attention to detail, no assembly line kitting in this one..

BTE venture 60,build one of these and you'll throw all the Sig 4*s in the trash,fly a Venture 60 then you'll pull the 4*s out of the trash and stomp them,do I think Bruce has a winner with the V60? Yea, and I've also built and flown the others also.:)

I'll have to agree with the Carl Goldberg Tiger 60, very nice kit to build , and it even comes with a few simple sanding jigs, and wing jig tools.s ( all made of ly of course). Nonetheless, you'll love this kit. Build lite in the tail though.

I'll have to 2nd (3rd and 4th) the Bruce Tharpe Venture 60. The jolly dude in the red suit brought mine last week. Started on it this weekend and I'll have to say I hope all kits are as easy to build and the wood is such great quality. There's a couple really good threads here on RCU that pretty much take you through the building process if you have any questions.

If he would consider a slightly smaller plane all the Herr Kits are impossible to build wrong unless you try. They fly great and use little fuel because the use small engines. The J3 is great to learn on as is the Starcruiser. Most are designed as 3 channel, as most primary trainers are, but can be built with full house controls easily. I've built many kits but these are by far the easiest and fastest. They are distributed thru SIG Mfg.

How about the SIG LT 25?

You open the box, pour CA into it and shake it up, and it comes out a built plane!

The laser cutting makes it just fall together.

The SE is also excellent, and a great second plane, but maybe too aerobatic for a trainer.

another vote for the bte venture 60. was my first kit and aside from the normal learning curve that would accompany any first kit, this was a first class build and a very, very enjoyable flyer.

The worst kit I ever tried was a Sterling Piper Tri Pacer..Never did finish it--gave it to a guy in Mi. ,and he sold it on ebay for $100.00 The easiest I have found was the LT-25.. Have to be blind to screw up-------
