gp cub 40

im in the process of building the rudder and the directions call forthe tailwheel to be installed directly into the rudder and i dont trust it. so i was wondering if it would be okay to use a tailwheel brakcet on the bottom of the plane.

Th three Cubs that I have built all used CB Associates tail wheel assemblies mounted on the bottom of the fuselage. They must be mounted to hard ply. Easy to do. more of a scale like appearance, too.

Sullivan makes a real nice tailwheel that uses a spring to connect to the rudder. Very affective and very easy to install. You just need a little plywood on the fuse where the mount attaches. If the fuse is already covered, just remove the covering where you put the ply and fuel proof with epoxy or recover.

The tailwheel on that Cub works pretty well, but if you want to go with an external type, by all means do so. But do like Tom said, and reinforce the last 2 or3 inches of the fuse bottom with plywood (1/8 - 3/16" should do fine)

Hello Guys,

Bloody foreigner giving you tips when my plane hasn't even flown yet!! The cub that I am building calls for a tail wheel to be located at the back of the fusx. I have purchased some extra and longer wire that is the same diameter as that supplied with the wheel and bent it to follow along the fusx and up into the rudder. This option gives you the added delight of a steerable tail wheel!
tell me it is bad, I don't mind but it has worked on the other cubs that have done the same thing.

So Paul, are you saying that the original tail wheel WASN'T steerable??? Didn't know they still made kits like that.

I built the GP Cub 40 several years ago. I didn't like the tail wheel provided, so I used a Sullivan tail wheel. This takes the load off the rudder. By the way, I wasn't too crazy about the kit or the way it flew. It may have been just me.

Hopkimf,
What wing did you build, the full length or clipped? I have this kit on my shelf to eventually build. Most I have talked to suggest the clipped wing for better flight. I am still undecided on full length or clipped. I'm curious what you did not like about the kit.
