RE: aeroworks edge 540 pictured construction manual

I will be building the same kit in the Spring. I plan to document every !! step of the process
with my digital camera and my lap top. I know you probably want to get going soon, sorry.
I too am dissappointed in the manual and lack of pics. I plan to make mine public when
I complete it. Anyone interested in following up on my progress please keep in touch. I plan
to start building in late April. This is the configuration I plan to go with.

Kit - Edge 540 25% 1/4 Scale
Radio - Futaba 8uafs
9402 servos
Engine - OS 1.6 fx
Muffler - Slimline w/Smoke

Take care, have fun Tyler

I built one about two years ago. Nice kit, flies great. Plans were somewhat crude, and the instructions and a couple of photos were not that great. If you study them long enough you will be able to get a decent plane out of it.

RE: aeroworks edge 540 pictured construction manual

I have just completed mine. I have clicked few photogrphs but are not very great . Still if you guys require I can always post them over here. Its a very easy kit to build.

Would suggest to make control surfaces with bit thicker sticks 5/16" sticks are very soft and not enough strength to the tail surfaces. Sheat wing panels with 3/32" balsa sheet, select balsa sheets before sheeting , select them to equal weights each side.

You can increase the rudder by an inch, you can increase elevator also by an Inch. Critical steps are to do Incidence, fitting of the phenolic tube .

Incidence meter is highly recomended for this aircraft. Hope it helps.

RE: aeroworks edge 540 pictured construction manual

I will be making a post when I start. Along with the photos but like I said earlier,
unfortunatly I can't start unitl late April. No building workshop to buuild in.
I lost my workshop in my move and do't have one yet.

PS - If anyone is in central East central NJ that can loan me some workspace
let them know about me. PILOT SEEKING WORKSHOP, WILL PAY WITH
BEER AND PIZZA.

PSS - The pictures attached show why I really! need to start on the
Edge 540. Today I had an "incident" with the RV-4. First crash in 3 years
, one hell of a run. I like to think it was the ground that flew into my plane
instead of me flying into the ground The Red Edge behind it was salvaged from a fellow
flier for hardware. It WAS an Edge 90 size.

Finally, Flew my AW 25 % yesterday. Great Plane and a lovelly design. It just went roaring like a tiger in the sky. It flew totaly hands off . No triming was required. Landed like a big bird, stall speed is great you can actually land pretty slow. Configuration on my plane is Saito 180, Hitech 5945 servos, 8 UAP Futaba Radio. Hope you guys have it in the air soon.

Regards

Sharad

I am currently building the 29% Edge from AW and if you need pictures of mine I can post some. I am not sure how closely they build but someone may be able to compare the two kits for ya. Mine is still in the wood stage so nothing has been covered and will be easily photographed. Here is a pic of my current status.....

This is a picture of mine. Bought it over 5 years ago. The only thing I did to it was add flying wires to the horizontal stab and reinforce the landing gear area as I fly off grass.

Power was a Saito 150 and weight was 9 1/2 lbs. When I originally bought the kit from Aero Works, they sent me some Polaroids of several construction procedures.

Please post pics of the build guys. Very interested in doing one of these myself. I have never delt with foam surfaces so very curious how to do those.
Do you think the hardware pack they offer is worth it? I have built many models but they are all 40 and 60 size.
If these planes come in under 11 lbs. a saito 150 should give UV wouldn't it?
Thanks

RE: aeroworks edge 540 pictured construction manual

Problem is the pictuers of construction I have clicked are not very much detailed and focused . Sheeting a foam wing is very easy and intresting wont be difficult at all. Still if you have any question can post on this forum and can help you out through the building.

Also before starting to build, look on the www.carden-aircraft.com website there is a link www.edge540.com on the construction of the carden edge 540.

Hope it helps ................ Happy building.....;)

Here are a few construction pics of the Fuse. Most people won't benefit from pics of a sheeted wing due to the fact that there is not much that can be gained throught looking at the sheeting. I will post pics of the servo locations on the wings later as I did it a different method from which the instructions said to.

Here is a Shot of the GEAR MOUNTING PLATE....

Keep in mind this is the 29% so yours may vary...

Thanks Sundevil,
The fuse looks pretty straight forward. Its cutting the foam Im not sure about. But we have some older gents in our club that have been building for quit awhile so I dont think i will have to much trouble getting them cut. I hope. LOL.
Has anyone used the hardware pack they offer and the CF gear? Are they worth it?
Thanks for the input.
Keep the pics and flight reports comming.

The pictuers are very good and neet as well as your construction. Looks great. Thinking of buying the 29 % now.

RE: aeroworks edge 540 pictured construction manual

One thing more what I like about the construction is that you have given supports to formers and wing support plates. Can I know were the incidence wholes came drilled from aeroworks?
Why have you mounted the Wing Support plate over the spars?

RE: aeroworks edge 540 pictured construction manual

Hey Sundevilpilot,
Do you think it's feasible to scratch built that 29% Edge from the Aeroworks's original plan? What would be the most difficult parts to cut?

I mean: i would be very interested to build that plane but i prefer to cut and to select the wood and parts myself to get a better and lighter plane....

450$ for only 10lbs of balsa and plywood box seems expensive! I am sure it's possible to buy a canopy and cowl from AW?

Wing Support Plates.... They are on top of the stingers but I dont see a problem with it. The fuse sides are also a precise fit with the wing tube and the inner ones basically double that. There is no way that you could rip them out once they are in there, if they did fail it would have to come at the expense of ripping the fuse in half.

As for the incidence holes.... When they are from the factory the fuse just has dimples where the incidence holes on my fuse are. You have to create the hole which allows you to adjust it to your fuse. In My case I have bigger holes in the fuse than most. I am Using the Wing Studs from DA which are bigger than the 1/4 dowels that the plans call for. I didn't want the wings to be held on by bolts at the ends of the tubes so I changed the design a bit. I still have to add the plates to the fuse at the locations of the holes for the bolts to tighten against but the incidence is set as of this point.
