Need some engine/kit advice
Just wanted to get some feedback on how well an O.S. FS-40 Surpass would work in a Great Planes Slowpoke 40.
On the GP website the Slowpoke 40 has an engine range that includes at the low end a .40 four-stroke, but the plans call for between a .48 and .52 four-stroke. To me it seems that a .40 four will work but may be a bit lacking in certain situations. But since I'm just looking for a nice slow follow on to a high wing trainer (an CG Eagle 2) I don't think it will be a problem for me. That is, I really don't need anything too fast or overpowered. Any opinions? Thanks |

I think a .40 four stroke will be fine. Just keep it light. Let us know how she flies.

Doug, thanks for the feedback. I'll let you know how it goes. However, since I haven't even started the kit yet it will be a while.
I would also like to know if anyone has any suggestions for a good kit to put my FS-40 in, other than the GP Slowpoke that is?? I have a Gee Bee Tigermoth that I hope to finish one of these days and I might try it in that. Thanks |
RE: Need some engine/kit advice
If I were you, I would go with a .52. You can power back with that one, but with a .40, that is all you have. It will be slow, and underpowered with a .40. You also have the problem that with the 40, you will have an engine that will not work on most of the 40 size planes out there. if you go with the .52, you will have an engine that will work with just about any of them.

RE: Need some engine/kit advice
Thanks Flyboy.
I think your right in that it would be better to have .52 for a .40 size plane. But since I already have the .40 just sitting around, I want to find someplace to put it. All the .25-.35 size planes, just seem a bit small and unstable for my skill level. That's why I haven't used it in the Tigermoth I have. I think until I get a bit better at flying I need to stick to larger slower planes. |
