HOB T-6
 

Just finished up a House of Balsa T-6 done up as a Canadian Harvard. The full size is at the Shearwater Aviation Museum which is about 2 km from where I live. 44" span, OS 15 FP for power, four channel, all up weight 2 lbs 1 oz. This compares very favorably with the stated weight on the box of 2.5 - 3 lbs. It should be a nice flyer. I'll post flight reports after I get it in the air. It's still too cold here to go flying yet.

Looks great, a lot of people get worried about the small planes not flying well, but HOB has found a way of making the 20 and .049 sizes fly like the bigger ships. I was nervious about my little FW-190 from HOB and when the first flight was over I couldn't wait to fly it again. Great job on the T-6 and smooth landings to you.

Here is the fourth one of these I've built. It is loosely modeled after a Reno racing AT-6 #90 "The Undecided" from a few years ago. It took me three days from frame up to cover and than a day or two for engine and radio. It has a K&B 20 with an 8x5 APC which turns well over 16,000. We race them here in Socal and they are great fun. They are squirelly on the ground and shimy through the turns but I love flying them. Keep the throws low, only about 5/16" elevator and don't pull it off the ground untill you have some good speed or it will tip stall. At the weight you mentioned it shouldn't have any bad habits as long as you gave it the washout called for in the plans. Mine came in at 2-1/2 pounds which is the minimum allowed for our races. Nice job on yours, enjoy it.

Where did you get that great looks engine cowl? I made one out of balsa and intended to make the plane electric, but the gear I tried (had) was too weak so now I am going glow.
I don't think the balsa cowl will hold up well with fuel and vibration expecially after I cut it up for the muffler. Here is a pict...still have some details to finish.


How did it fly with the 0S 15? I was thinking about the OS .25 LA

Hi Scudrunner,

My T-6 hasn't flown yet due to being too busy at work and the field being too wet. I expect that it will fly in the next 2 or 3 weeks. The cowl is a #7 microwaveable bowl from Rubbermaid. It's listed in the instructions as an alternate for the pop bottle bottom. I sanded it with 600 grit paper then primed and painted it to match the covering. Don't use anything coarser than the 600 grit, it leaves scratches that cannot be removed (don't ask how I know this). The plastic is a bit brittle so when you find the Rubbermaid bowls, buy a couple, they're cheap as dirt anyway.

I won't be flying mine for a while. Getting an OS .25 LA for my Jr Tiger and after I get up to speed will put that engine on the T-6. I have not flown a glow plane in 8 yrs....

Scudrunner, I have a HOB and Model Tech AT-6 and the model tech is an exact copy. I can say this because my Model tech is used for Scale and open combat. Due to its rather hard use it has been in midair's three or four times, and knocked a tree over. Well the year after it hit the tree the tree fell, so I guess that counts? Anyway Both my AT-6's have very nice fiberglass cowls that I've purchased from Hobby People as I needed replacement parts, The cost when I bought them two years ago was 15.00 each plus S&H. To be honest I don't know they still sell the ARF but still see them flying.

HOB T-6 Finally flys!
 

It's been almost two months since it was finished, but my HOB T-6 finally flew today! I had to add 2 oz of nose weight to balance so the final ready to fly weight is 2 lbs 3 oz, but she flew right out of my launcher's hand, no trim required. The wind was blowing and gusty but it didn't seem to bother the little T-6 much. My main concern was to get a good launch to avoid tip stalls with the small engine. No worries at all, she flew marvelously. No in-flight photos, but here's one from the flight line.
