kavalier surface throws
 

i picked up an old kavalier at an auction, and put a new radio in it. the manual didnt come with the plane and i have no idea what the servo throws are for the control surfaces. if anybody knows, can they please let me know.

I don't have the plans anymore but perhaps 3/8" on airlaron, 1/2" elevator and the same for rudder would be a good mild start. I don't think you could be in much trouble with a start like that. If flying off grass a little more elevator might be needed..depends on the power you are using.

My instruction book gives this as the suggested beginning adjustments:

elevator 7/16 up and down

rudder 5/8

ailerons 7/32 up and 5/32 down with the neutral point being slightly above the WT plane. WT is the ply piece at the wing center trailing edge. If you have nylon bolts for wing attachment, they go thru this piece.


You didn't ask about CG, but I measured from the plans and it is 3 1/4" from the leading edge for most forward, and 4 1/8 for most aft for aerobatics. The aft CG comes with the usual advice about being an expert pilot before trying it.

i have been looking everywhere to try and find the throws. i read a post placed here previously about the CofG and thats why i didnt ask. thaks for all your help guys!!

They fly very well, especially with a little extra HP and the dihedral removed. I wore mine out completely may it RIP. Just never liked the canopy, had to be an afterthought.....

I debated the dihedral decision and decided to go with most of it. It isn't much to begin with, and the plane always had a great flying reputation. Building a new wing without it is always an option. Most of it is basically building from scratch anyway, so I will only lose tme cutting out ribs. I do think it will fly differently without dihedral, and that question will always be there until I try both.

Gizmo, did you fly your with the CG all the way aft?

I flew mine about in the middle as I remember, things change as fuel burns down..Good luck.

I will try and tint the canopy tonight. I may try and cut it down smaller. Depends on the fit with the front of the fuselage.

Since you wore yours out, I assume it is hanging somewhere in the shop or den. I have to keep building as my wife wants planes hanging all over the place.

Actually I gave the wing to a young club member. He built a similar plane around it and is still flying it. The whole fusalage collapsed on the origional due to many fixes and much oil soaking, etc. It just came apart on a not-to-hard landing.
The wing is the best part of this model, mine took a real beating and is still going strong the rest sadly is not.
All RC aircraft have an expiration date somewhere on them, eventually you will find it.

A fitting end then. At least the wing is still flying. I guess that hanging them is okay, but still flying is better.
