GP p51

the brown dude has the box..
anybody built this thing before?
any hints, tips, things i should do?

when the retracts breaks...is it breaking away from wing
or the landing gear itself is breaking?

i also have a tf, o.s.1.20, robarts. NIB
havn't build it...watched p-51s nose over all the time at my field.
i started flying becuase of wanting to fly a p-51
maybe i'm up to it ,now.
i figure i'll start with a .40 size before i invest time into building the
.60

thanks

The answer is... both. The ribs need to be reinforced with play on both sides and you need to use some triangle stock where the ribs and the mounts glue together.

For the retracts, the Hobbicos I had in mine broke several times but in all fairness, my airplane was a little heavy. Mine had a .61FX which made it almost a pound heavier then one with a smaller engine like a .46FX.

Just build it as the plans state. this is a great P-51 to get started with.

Take your time and build it straight. Try to keep it light. You'll love it.

I have to agree with Minn. Build it as per plans, but do add the reinforcment for the landing gears. I also agree that the Hobbico retracts are less than desirable. I will however say that I made one of the prettiest landings I have ever made with one wheel after the strut feel out on final. My son's has a 46 on it and it is a great flying plane. If memory serves me correct, it is using the Ultra Sport wing so the P 51 has no tendancy to want stall. Good Luck, Dave

Yes, the GP P-51 does use a modified Ultrasport wing (Which is actually a modified Kaos wing). It's one of the best wings ever designed for models.
