Longevity of foam for wings
For foam wings, is there a time when they should be considered too old to be used. I'm thinking of buying an older kit with foam wings and if the foam for the wings is past its prime I don't want the kit.
What are your opinions / facts on this. Thanks |
Longevity of foam for wings
I think styro-foam has a half-life of something like 5 Bazillion years (if you ask the environmentalists). Depending on how old the kit is, I would be much more concerned with the condition that the balsa is in rather that worry about the foam.

Longevity of foam for wings
I still fly Ed Kecks MACO Jet Star (60 powered 1960/1970 styled pattern plane) which I bought in 1973. It has a foam wing with a card board cover and the card board is covered with the original Solar Film. The plane last flew in 2001 however the foam is as good as the day I bought it. Anyone remember MACO models? I also had the 40 powered VEGA but let it get away from me and I got disoriented and splattered it on pile of concrete blocks.
