RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Congragulations on your 182 kit. I have built one and as everyone said it will take a fair amount of time to build up. Being the sheeting is the most time consuming. I love to see fellow modelers going the extra mile to help each other out. Damontx, that was
one great offer you made to help out Ari. Nice reading posts like this one. :):):) Best Regards, Scott |
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
i bought this kit about 5 years ago and have not touched it until about 2 weeks ago. i am having a blast building it but it takes so much time and the directions are a little complicated in areas. i hope you enjoy building it.

Nice kit - I'd be glad to answer any building questions as well.....
Here's some photos of mine.... Scott |
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Received mine today. The kit looks like a quality kit.
Also received the cockpit interior, robart nose gear strut and a full set of navigation lights. I hope to start the build in a few weeks time. I intend to go as far as I can with scale items. I see there are several threads here where people have built some impressive planes out of this kit. Nice work on your plane Scott, what engine and muffler combination did you use? Pundi, if you want to build "jointly", I'm happy to keep up some correspondence Ari |
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
thanks, but i wont be building my kit until christmas. (christmas present). but if you could let me know about any difficulties you have building it. are you going to cover it with film or paint and glass it. are robart nose gears expensive? i will be sure to ask questions if i get stuck
can you please send pics of the construction. thanks very much! |
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Scotty, that is a GREAT job and that Cessna!
Did you paint or decal the trim? |
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Pundi,
I won't start working on mine yet either. I have too much going at the moment and since I want to give that little Cessna full attention, I want to clear the workshop of other things. Before I start, I need to finish the 1/5 Pepsi Chipmunk I have been building, I have a Curare60 "in the bones" and I also have a 33% Super Decathlon from Wendell Hostetler plans half built :) I ordered the kit and the extras from Tower. The Robart gear (which is a piece of art) cost USD$57 I think. I think it's well worth the expense. I am planning to try to modify the Cessna in a similar way as Paul (SDCrashmeister) has done where the wing meets the fuselage. I still haven't worked out the details of how exactly I expect to do it but the first thing will be to run a few copies of the plans and then work out the modifications on the copies rather than scribble all over the original plans. I had been thinking about glassing. Caffeenman has posted some excellent tips on glassing on his website but I have never glassed before. Before attempting that, I may have to build some structures to practice glassing. The Cessna kit is too nice to make a mess of with bad glassing. Ari |
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
top flight kit is now 179.99!!!! thats pretty cheap
|
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
I'm about to purchase one of these Kits but I've also thought of the PICA has anyone built both which would be better? not building wise that's not my concern that's the easy part But which looks better upon completion?
thank you |

RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
I have a buddy that started one of these as his first build. That was easily 5 years ago and he hasn't touched it for 4 years. The wing is pretty much done along with the tail feathers. The body is barely started.
TF kits are great building kits, but I have to agree with the posters that said to start with something smaller and dare I say.... less scale. Any person taking on this project should realize that it is going to take a large investment of time, money and commitment to get it done. A lot of people get sticker shock on their fist large scale model as well. I had major sticker shock with my Midwest 27% Extra 300S. If a person uses typical sport RC equipment and cheap engines on a project such as this, then they are penny wise and dollar foolish. When a person has this much investment in a project you simply must use high quality (expensive) radio gear and engines. Just some things to think about... |
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
To bend balsa around curves and conturs, I use a 50/50 solution of ammonia and water. It works really well. Thats my 2 cents.
|
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
i am having a few problems now trying to order one! the cheapest which i will most likely get is from col taylor hobbies for $455, but will have to back order it for me so it wont get here until the end of january 05. hopefully it might come a bit earlier.
sunday morning i took my stick out for a fly and crashed it into a barb wire fence after a deadstick landing which ripped a huge gash out of the wing from the iron dropper. it also loosened the rudder and put a few cracks in the body. |
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
pundi,
Did your order from the other shop fall through? You will be happy with the kit once you receive it. It looks like a quality kit from what I can see. Only thing I'm somewhat doubtful about are the ABS parts but then again, look what Paul (SDCrashmeister), Randy (Puff Daddy) and others have done with theirs. I'm going to finish off the Curare60 and the 1/5 Pepsi Chipmunk I'm working on before I start on the Cessna. I picked up a SuperTigre G75 on ebay the other day. I wonder if it will be a good engine for this plane. What do others think? I also have 91FS and 1.20FS. Would either of those be a better choice? Ari |
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
the other shop i was going through (wings'n things) could not get it in for a wile but i am now getting it from col taylor models for one hundred dollars cheaper but also cant get till end of jan. o' well.
i am hoping to start the day i recieve it. |
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Don't know about Paul, but the only abs parts I used was the strips that go on the control surfaces. Know on my old one, I did use all of the abs parts, took some work, but they can be made to look nice. Ari, when do plan on starting yours?
|
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
For ABS parts, I always apply a layer of .75 ounce fiberglass with epoxy, inside the parts. It helps stiffen them, and prevents those nasty cracks that are so common with ABS.
|
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Randy, I hope to start around or just after Christmas time.
First, I wanted to finish off the ones I am currently working - besides, it was a Christmas prezzy :) |
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
Would the OS .65 LA 1.7hp @16000rpm produce enough thrust for the TF C-182?
|
RE: TopFlight Cessna 182
I am assembling one right now. It is my 5th kit.
Honestly, the TopFlite Cessna 182 Gold Edition is not for biginners. Sorry if I'm writing too late. |
