RE: CG for Speedy Bee
I'm curious;
How can you be building a Bee if you don't have a set of plans? You must Bee a VERY GOOD builder to attempt such a feat. BTW... what sort of power plant are you going to be putting into the Bee? |
RE: CG for Speedy Bee
My plans have been water damaged. My Bee has been built for some time now. I just got around to installing the flight pack.
Power plant is a magnum .25 . Hitec micro flight pack. Will wieght it maybe tomorrow, I think its right at 3lbs. Thanks for the cg. :) |

RE: CG for Speedy Bee
Mars;
You have built a fine looking AC, and I know from experiance that once balanced it will be a STELLAR Performer... BUT; allow me to give you some advice . . . Given the engine that you have mounted . . . you have MORE THAN ENOUGH POWER for that airframe . . . I have built, flown and lost three Speedy Bees that I had powered with an OS .20 (I learn my lessons slowly) The first Speedy Bee had the wing separate from the Fuse when the Elastic retainer snapped (1/8" dowel), the other two planes had the Horizontal Stab break in flight (Flutter due to excessive speed & stress). My advice to you is to not exceed 1/2 throttle or to change the engine to a .15 . Keep in mind that Andy Clancy designed this plane for electrics and Glow engines are a whole lot more powerful!! Happy New Year! |
RE: CG for Speedy Bee
My bee is @3lbs 2oz. Also built with the dual shock plan.
I replaced 85 percent of the balsa spars with basswood. Tons of reinforcing done. Wing pins are 1/4" and glassed in. 3 Giant scale hinges for rudder. The real reason for the .25 (other then unlimited vert) is very thin air @10,000ft. High alpine Colorado runway. She probably won't maidan till spring. Im very happy with the wieght considering the motor, shocks, 1 standard on bells. I really liked the build, and think Bee's have a special look to them. I plan on trying to get a StaggerBee next. :) |
RE: CG for Speedy Bee
Hello; I like the Speedy Bee too! mine had a Surpass 26 in it, I suppose I flew about a gallon of fuel through it before I stepped on it and crushed it to a million pieces. I was running up the engine standing with the horizontal stab behind my ankles, I stepped over it to let it go and my hiking boots grabbed teh antenna wire. Thinking quickly, I stepped down right on teh pilot and killed him too. It was a sad day.
I should build another one, I had so much fun with that plane. I covered it with Tyvek, and until I stepped on it, it was tough as nails. I actually did a vertical figure 8 around teh telephone wires alongside our flying field. . . deliberatly. |
RE: CG for Speedy Bee
OK Mars;
It sounds like you have done some serious Mods to the Bee - Good Stuff! BUT... (there's always a but) you didn't mention the Horizontal Stab, this item is designed as a 1/8" piece of Balsa. I had TWO of these break in flight, my recommendation to you is to reenforce the H Stab. I would suggest that you build a H Stab with the Leading Edge made of Plywood or Spruce (just the first 1/2") that will stiffen the H Stab without adding too much weight. Good Luck and let me know how it all works out! |
