Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
I am currently building a Sig Hog Bipe and originally was planning on a strong .60 or .65 2-stroke. Now toying around with putting a Surpass .90 4-stoke. Is this too much engine? How is the balance?

Propwash,
I've owned 3 Hog Bipe's and all of them had the OS 91 Surpass on them. I think that Sig designed this plane for that motor. It's almost a perfect combo. Trust me, you won't go wrong putting that motor on. |
RE: Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
Ditto... a Sig Pig and an OS 91 = Heaven

RE: Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
One of our club members did the same thing and NO, it isn't too much engine. You can slow it down with prop selection until you find the right combo for you. This one is flown by A teenager and too much is never enough for him. The air frame is holding up very well.

Go with the .91. I have a Saito .91 in my Hog and I burned up 5 gallons of 15% helli fuel with it last summer. I love to fly that Hog.

I have a Saito 91 in my Hog Bipe as well, awesome combination.

I have a Saito 100GK in my black and gold Hog Bipe. Looks and flies excellent!

You guy's with the 91 Saito's what prop do you like best?
|
RE: Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
Not trying to hijack, but... What do you guys think about a 91 FS on a
Sig Skybolt? OS 70 FS, was anemic... Thanks, Johnny C! |
RE: Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
I originally used a 13x8 and recently changed it to a 14x6. I like the 14x6 best. The Hog is draggy anyway being a biplane. This prop gives it more thrust at slower speeds where the Hog likes to fly. Helps with the vertical as well.
Cheers! Jollidude |
RE: Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
I experimented with a few different props too, but decided on the 14x6 too.

RE: Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
APC 14x6 worked for mine

I have a Sig Hog Bipe with a O.S. .91..and flys and handles great. I did put a little spongier landing gear on. Hear are some pics.

I also mounted the os 91fs.
I tried all kinds of props (all apc), from 15-6, 14-6, 14-8. really liked the 14-8, but decided to go on the 14-7. it flies a little slower, but has more thrust for climbing. the 14-7 is a winner for me. [img][/img] |

I have the TT 91 FS and like the 15x4W APC. Unlimited vertical!

I have a sweet running, well broke-in Saito 100 on my Sig Pig. It does a great job. The Pig goes to the field almost every time I go. I really enjoy it.

RE: Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
I'm considering a YS 1.20. What do ya'll think?
|
RE: Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
i think the satio 100 is a MUCH better combination then the OS 120..... the OS weigh much more then the satio and the satio has almost the same amonth of power as the OS...... :)
|
RE: Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
I have both the Saito 1.00 and the YS 1.20. I was simply wishing to use my YS on something.
If I were to use a OS 4cycle, I'd pitch it in favor of the Magnum 4cycle. Same power, just not as shiney. And they are considerably cheaper. |

I have a very reliable magnum 4-stroke 80 in my Hog and has over 500 flights.
Any more power and I would probably blow the ailerons off...hehe |
RE: Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
I maidened my Sig Hog deaux last weekend with the Saito 100 on it. It was ballistic with a 14x8... It will definantly have a different prop before it flies again to slow it down. I can't be trusted to used the throttle to make it go slow.

RE: Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
Ken, as I stated I HAVE a TT 91 FS with the 15x4W APC and it HAS unlimited vertical. I was not asking if it would, I was stating that it does. You are correct in stating that the 91 4-stroke is not overpowering it, but with the right 91 and right prop you can achieve unlimited vertical if your build is light. A 91 4-stroke is probably the perfect engine for this plane. Trying to put a 120 on it would require some weight in the tail and/or moving the firewall back to get the balance right. The Saito 100 would be the largest engine I would consider since it is as light as a 91.

RE: Too much engine for Hog Bipe??
How about two strokers? will a strong .61 give UL vertical? I assume a .90 size would, but maybe be too powerful.
